Kicking up without proper support can make it difficult to get up and stay up in Handstand. Poor form is often due to either lack of awareness, lack of strength or fear. Here I share a super simplified (15second!) explanation on how to kick up more effectively (and without causing back pain). Allow me to elaborate further on the tips shared in this videos
1. Don’t Lead with the Toes
When hips and core remain closer to the floor as the toes go over head the lower back gets compressed. This can lead to injury. (Still some advanced practitioners can jump into Handstand with the toes leading but the reason they can do this because of their extraordinary core strength which remains supportive, even in the anteriorly tilted [back bending] hip position.) For newer Handstanders, learning to lead with the core is a much smarter way to begin your Handstand journey.
2. Level the Hips
Instead of lifting the leg as high as possible before kicking up roll the outer hip down to level the hips. This creates more stability across the pelvic girdle with enhanced inner thigh engagement.
3. Descend the Femur Bone
Again instead of lifting the leg as high as possible, hollow the lower belly and draw the thigh bone deeper into its' socket. This action stabilizes the lower back and helps get the hips lift over head sooner while kicking.
4. Front Ribs In
Hug the upper abs into the back body to support core engagement and move the torso over head. This further prevents the torso from drooping to the floor when the body should be lifting into the vertical position.
Note that this style of jumping requires more power in the grounded leg as well. You can use the momentum of the lifted leg swinging down and then up to help make the kick a bit lighter!

What a progress!
.
Back then, I remember I just wanted to put my elbows on the floor. Today I can easily do it and actually chill in the pose😛Honestly, I noticed progress only when I started using props and blocks.. swipe for videos to see how I practiced this pose to see progress❤️ Please note😝
.
1-YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER FORCE OR ASK SOMEONE TO FORCE/SIT on your back to get in this pose
.
2-You can ask someone to sit on your back ONLY IF YOUR TORSO AND BELLY ARE TOUCHING THE FLOOR FIRST without effort ( honestly you don’t want anybody to sit on your back/ spine/neck
.
3-The video on the left shows is my boyfriend just being silly and weird. He decided to «sit on my back » (without effort or dumping his weight on me) just to make fun of me because I couldn’t touch the floor
.
4- The video on the right is a REPRODUCTION of the video on the left(that I found while cleaning up my google photos)…just so you know..before he slowly sat on my back..my torso and belly were already touching the ground..so I didn’t need him to sit on my back to get in this pose..so please BE CAREFUL 😘🙆🏽♀️

Here are a few quick little tutorials on the shoulder alignment in Downward Facing Dog. I’ve enlisted my incredible wife, @vesic_jelena, to demonstrate the different shoulder positions.
-
Video 1️⃣
🚫Avoid internally rotating the upper arms and crunching the shoulders towards your ears. ✅Instead, while pressing firmly into the hands, try to roll your triceps down towards the floor.
-
Video 2️⃣
🚫Try not to collapse the chest towards the floor.
✅Tuck your lowest front ribs in and down to help lengthen the back and access your core.
-
Video 3️⃣
🚫Don’t pull the shoulder blades down your back. ✅Reach through your externally rotated arms and let the shoulder blades slide up the back towards your head.
-
Of course, there are many different ways to do the same thing, but these are the techniques that I’ve found most helpful for myself and my students. Try these tips out and let me know how it goes! 🙏

I’m sharing some sped up warm ups and then real time at the end so you can see how I’m not forcing the split...just slowly breathing into my flexibility.
Be careful not to go past your edge with this one. Only straighten as far as it feels comfortable for you. Even with the top leg bent, it makes for a beautiful shape!
