Lowell Live/Work by Azza Aboualam @azza__a (M. Arch I 2018) and Julie Turgeon @hooooolie (M. Arch I 2018) for Second-Year Core Studio with Bimal Mendis - Spring 2017 In a past predating mass mobility, living and working spaces often existed much closer to each other. The divorce between these spaces is now being challenged by emergent lifestyles that are blurring the boundary. This relationship permeates Lowell, especially its immigrant populations. Our proposal taps into Lowell’s existing entrepreneurialism, encouraging opportunities for productivity and exchange. Operating at the scale of the domestic unit, our primary building block, it challenges contemporary ideas of living where living and working spaces are atomized and independent. Conflating these two realms gives Lowell character and counters the threat of it becoming a Boston bedroom community.

Library Frame by Xiao Tan @_xiao_tan (M. Arch II 2018) for Advanced Design Studio: The Carnegie Library of the Future with Francine Houben @francinehouben and Eugene Han - Spring 2017 “My perception of the space of the branch library is through framing. A frame indicates a certain spectatorship between a person on one side and the life happening on the other side. A frame is a space of encounter, and this is what a branch library is about. The branch library is no longer only about reading books, but reading others, reading neighborhoods and reading the city. The library is constructed by a series of differentiated frames, small or big, thin or thick, open or enclosed, horizontal or vertical, a range of public spaces are structured and highlighted in the branch library. By looking at the interactions between the city, the books and the people, the branch library is more than just a building, it reflects the strata of the neighborhood, its people and history.”
