Congratulations to Louise Glück, awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature for her “unmistakable poetic voice, that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.”
Louise Glück is a Yale adjunct professor of English and the Rosenkranz Writer-in-Residence. From 2003 to 2010, she was the judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, the oldest annual literary award in the U.S. Glück’s literary archives are housed at Yale’s @beineckelibrary.
Glück’s previous honors include the Pulitzer Prize in 1993, the 2001 Yale Bollingen Prize, the 2014 National Book Award, the 2015 Gold Medal of Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the 2016 National Humanities Medal, one of the highest honors in American culture. She was the U.S. Poet Laureate 2003-2004.

Yale leaders have announced plans for the spring semester. For most Yale schools, classes will begin Feb. 1 and end May 7. As in the fall semester, some students will live and study on campus, and others remotely.
Plans for Spring 2021 are shaped by the Yale community's extraordinary work this semester to meet the challenges of teaching, learning, and research amid a pandemic — safeguarding public health while advancing Yale’s mission.

The Covid-19 testing sites within Yale's residential colleges make the twice-weekly screenings simple. The campus-wide effort to keep the Yale and New Haven communities healthy is made possible through the commitment of the students and staff who make these hallowed halls a home.

It's a dinosaur-sized ! This month's @NatGeo features three @YalePeabodyMuseum scientists changing the paleontological game. 🦕 Link in Highlights. 🦖
2. "All birds are dinosaurs, so it is also an avian dinosaur egg," says Yale PhD candidate Jasmina Wiemann.
This fossilized bird egg from what is now Nebraska was laid tens of millions of years after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. Even so, the remains help Wiemann analyze the chemistry of more ancient eggshells.
Photographed at Yale Peabody (Paolo Verzone/National Geographic)
3. Hesperornis (above), a Cretaceous protobird, is a distant relative of the early theropod Coelophysis, whose skull rests in the hands of Yale paleontologist Bhart-Anjan Bhullar. His research shows that as birds evolved, their adult skulls kept features that extinct dinosaurs had only as juveniles, paving the way for the avian beak.

4. A newly hatched Deinonychus chick is surrounded by colorful blue eggs in an aboveground nest. It's watched over by an attendant father.

5. Yale paleontologist Jasmina Wiemann with a cart of egg specimens from the Yale Peabody collection. Weimann’s research has shown that modern birds’ eggs did not evolve independently, as previously thought, but evolved instead from dinosaurs.
6. Fluorescing a ghostly blue, a stained chicken embryo in Bhullar's lab is in line to be examined under a microscope. By tracking how genes orchestrate the patterns of animals' growing bodies, Bhullar can see the nuts and bolts of development, improving our understanding of dinosaurs and their modern descendants.

For the first time since March, the Yale Farm welcomed a small number of students for a physically distanced workday, harvesting tomatoes and green beans. 🍅
This season, Farm produce has been donated to @SemillaCollectiveNHV, a community partner supporting local families experiencing pandemic- and poverty-related hunger. 🥕
The Farm remains closed to visitors, but all are welcome to admire the flowers and fall foliage, and wave hello, from outside the gates. 🍁

The Yale community mourns the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died yesterday at the age of 87. Ginsburg received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Yale in 2003.
In 2012, Ginsburg spoke at Yale Law School on the subject of women’s rights and equality. Link to video in Story.

“My days on campus…the experiences, the relationships formed, the triumphs, the challenges are such a big influence on who I have become.”
“...With hand on heart, I am inspired to keep on keeping on. I wish the same for my [Yale] tribe as you endeavor to make your way in this challenging world…and make your mark.”
— Actress Angela Bassett ’80, ’83 MFA, ’18 DFA Hon., selected by students for this year’s Yale Undergraduate Lifetime Achievement Award
In a letter to Bassett, @yalecollegecouncil president Kahlil Greene ’21 said: “I write to thank you for inspiring an entire generation of Yale students to break down barriers and follow their dreams.”
“The two major crises that have defined this year so far — the COVID-19 pandemic and the rampant racial violence throughout the United States — have beckoned us to wield our influence to help communities in need. With role models like you, students have a clear example of how we can use our Yale education to understand the issues affecting society, advocate for solutions that actually work, and generally make the world a better place.”

Following months of preparation, Yale Library — “the heart of the university” — has reopened to Yale faculty, students, and staff authorized to be on campus.
This major milestone in the life of a research institution is marked by physical changes — new contactless pickup and delivery services, Plexiglass shields at service desks, and restrictions on spaces where stairwells are narrow or mechanical systems cannot be adapted to new ventilation standards.
Most special collections reading rooms are now open, allowing Yale researchers access to vast collections of primary sources, rare texts, and other artifacts by appointment.
Many library services, including research consultations, library instruction, and workshops, are offered online only this fall, to minimize face-to-face interactions and ensure equitable access to resources and services for students enrolled remotely.

“The actions you take in the weeks ahead are going to make all the difference in what the semester looks like. ... Be conscientious in your daily habits, not letting down your guard — or your mask.”
