Our oceans provide us with a wealth of benefits, including a seemingly infinite supply of fish. But today, one third of the world’s assessed wild fish stocks have been pushed beyond their natural limits, and populations of the most vulnerable marine life continue to get caught up in nets and hooked on lines. Simply put, the way we fish today is unsustainable. And the problems that lead to declines in ocean life are rooted in some of the same underlying conditions that lead to human rights abuses—weak laws, a lack of transparency, and demand for cheap products. The solutions to help people fish more sustainably also create the critical infrastructure needed to eliminate human rights abuses in fisheries. WWF is working with fishers, government agencies, and the marketplace on three tools that are being put to work right now. Globally, 1/3 of all food is wasted. That means we also waste the water, energy, and land that goes into producing food. By shifting our actions, we can make a difference. Here are a few tips:
• Most of the time food is safe to eat longer than we think. Trust your senses to know when food has gone bad or research food freshness and storage options.
• You can freeze almost anything. While it’s a bit of extra work upfront, your efforts will help protect the environment in the long run.
• Buy only what you need from the grocery store; if you have extra food, reach out to others who may not or donate to a food bank.

Inspiring news: The first-ever twins born to habituated gorillas in the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Area are now four years old. Gorilla twins are extremely rare, so the survival of Inguka and Inganda brings hope that it is possible for other gorilla twins to survive in the future. 🦍 🦍Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered and face serious threats from poaching, disease, and habitat loss across Central Africa.
More than two decades ago, WWF launched Dzanga-Sangha’s gorilla habituation program in the Central African Republic. The program—and the tourism income it brought with it—provided local communities with new employment opportunities. Most recently, WWF is working to sustain benefits to the community despite the global travel restrictions caused by COVID-19.
Footage for this video was captured in the fall of 2019. Even before COVID-19, masks were used to protect the habituated gorillas against transmission of diseases from humans.
