Why do bees use hexagons to build their honeycombs? Why do beavers build dams? Tune in online Tuesday at 1 pm Pacific for to hear @JonathanLuckhurst, one of our Biennale Residency Alumni, talk about exploring these ideas in his interactive project Animal Architects currently on at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Animal Architects is inspired by the designed structures of insects, mammals and birds and the evolution of these structures over time and space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This free online event is great for the whole family! Learn how the space was conceptualized and what animals inspired the structures. Today was the community painting + unveiling of THE MEETING by Wang Shugang, a loan from the Vancouver Biennale to @artsontheave on Alberta Ave in Edmonton. Even in Covid times ART can be a catalyst to bring community together safely in a fun, playful way, and bring global voices into public spaces in memorable ways.

Congrats to Mamali Shafahi and Ali Eslami for winning Best Interactive award for their Virtual Reality installation nerd_funk at the Nederlands Film Festival awards this weekend! Mamali Shafahi debuted nerd_funk last year during his 2019 Artist Residency here at the Vancouver Biennale. Did you get a chance to experience his VR world last summer? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

LOVE YOUR BEAN - where are they now? 2 of the 3 bean sculptures have made their way to Alberta Ave in Edmonton! It’s part of a 2 year partnership loan with Arts on the Ave. We’ve seen Edmonton media and community buzzing around these sweet delights this past week, reminding how impactful public art can be in our communities.
These beans are whimsical, joyful, interactive, enticing yet a little bit unsettling in how large they are, and how small we become next to them. “Love your bean” was a mantra that artist Cosimo Cavallaro told himself while he worked on the highly polished fibreglass resin of the sculpture, inspiring a deeper focus on the nature of love, shape, and colour.
But of course, those are just two of the three beans from Charleson Park. Where’s the third? We’ll have a bit of news on that bean for you coming soon…. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ photo: 1 - Local MLA @janis.irwin, 2,3,4 - @artsontheave ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Beautiful morning, but sad to bid farewell today to PARADISE HAS MANY GATES by Saudi Arabian artist @AjlanGharem in Vanier Park.
Created to be used by community members to gather and exchange ideas, we have seen it come alive through the work of countless community partners and visitors since 2018. The artwork inspired collaborations and exhibitions, performances, poetry readings, prayers, dialogues, multicultural celebrations and school field trips. For many it was a surprising artwork in an unexpected place, but became a place of reflection, questions, exchange of ideas and connection.
The spirit of intercultural dialogue continues, and we are excited to be collaborating with other global partners to reinstall the artwork internationally, where it may continue to be activated as a catalyst for community engagement, difficult conversations, and connection.

Why do bees use hexagons to build their honeycombs? Why do beavers build dams? Jonathan Luckhurst, one of our Biennale Residency Alumni, explores these ideas in his interactive project Animal Architects currently on at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. Our Artistic Director @barriemowatt experienced a taste of the project with Jonathan and Dara Armsden, Head of Education and Learning at the Art Gallery of Alberta this week.
Animal Architects is inspired by the designed structures of insects, mammals and birds and the evolution of these structures over time and space. Families can book a time to visit and explore the space and Luckhurt’s interactive project in a COVID-safe way until April, 2021. Simply call the AGA to book your time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Going, going, gone! This is your LAST weekend to explore PARADISE HAS MANY GATES by Saudi Arabian artist Ajlan Gharem in Vanier Park before it comes down on Monday, September 21st. By designing the structure in the form of a mosque, an Islamic sacred and community space, Gharem invited us to question the role of religion in society.
Created to be used by community members to gather and exchange ideas, It came alive through the work of countless community partners and visitors since 2018. The work inspired a historic collaboration between Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Islamic weavers and designers that led to two exhibitions that are now touring Canada and internationally: Weaving Cultural Identities and Threads Through Time.
We saw performances, poetry readings, prayers, dialogues, Multicultural Day celebrations and school field trips take place here, and collaborations with the Indian Summer Festival, Museum of Vancouver, Maritime Museum, and the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies at Simon Fraser University.
The spirit of intercultural dialogue continues, and we are excited to be collaborating with other global partners to reinstall the artwork internationally, where it may continue to be activated as a catalyst for community engagement, difficult conversations, and connection.

Like so many, we are heartbroken by the devastating fire at Pier Park in New Westminster last night. We hope the sculpture WOW WESTMINSTER ( ‘W’ ) by José Resende can be restored and reinstalled, as a beloved symbol of the city, a legacy of the Pier & it’s history.

Did you know we have Vancouver Biennale sculptures in Squamish? Come sit inside the heart of a tree with PUBLIC FURNITURE URBAN TREES - SQUAMISH by Brazilian artist Hugo França. Over the past twenty years, he has researched and developed techniques to transform salvaged fallen trees into sculptures and furniture. With PUBLIC FURNITURE URBAN TREES - SQUAMISH, França used this expertise to convert trunks and roots of local fallen cedar trees and trees that have washed ashore, creating this sculptural furniture for the community to experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
