Bordeaux š· ā£
The Bordeaux region was such a favourite of ours. We did reside on an adorable little boat in the city docks (see our story- you have to see this boat) which helped things immensely but it was of course the wineries that were the major draw card for us (and by us I mean the adults š).ā£
ā£
Many of the wineries are family friendly though donāt necessarily cater to children. Like, at all. But bikes, sprawling vines and green spaces are all kid favoured pastimes and in this way everyone wins. ā£
ā£
Our biggest tip? To avoid any kind of disappointment, do not just rock up to a winery, expecting a taste and tour. This is no bueno. You need to book and this isnāt always straight forward. Do your research, ask a local and before you can say āvoilaā youāll be enjoying a Bordeaux red with this kind of backdrop. šš»

Parenting community service announcement:ā£
When your kid asks āwhat does OPP stand for?ā and you just know theyāve been singing it all day because they were when you dropped them off in the morning and they are still now when youāve picked them up in the afternoon, donāt say, āthe song explains it, listen to the songā. Especially if you yourself havenāt really taken in the lyrics beyond the opening four lines which are for you, no-doubt, well rehearsed and gloriously, hip-hoppily executed:ā£
āHarm me with harmonyā£
Dave drop a load on 'emā£
OPP, how can I explain it?ā£
I'll take you frame by frame it...ā.ā£
ā£
Because, and this is the takeaway here: given the name of the artist is literally Naughty by Nature, youāre probably (definitely) going to be up for some nsfw explanatory conversations with your 7 and 5 year olds.ā£
ā£
Whoās down with OPP? Oh gosh, not me!ā£

Toothless twins!
The little one lost hers when she nose dived off her scooter and landed on the concrete earlier in the year and the big one lost hers when her mother got sick of hearing that creaking hinge noise of the incessant manual wobbling by dirty kid fingers.

š„ Hereās a highlight-reel reel from our time in gorgeous Conques. āļø

Gosh we loved Conques. Itās like a painting, or a secret, locked at the valley of surrounding lush green mountains. There are goats. They have bells. And there is an ancient Abbey and something about it feels divine (in the true sense of that word). Both J and I, on separate days hiked the 11kms from our little village to Conques, a popular leg of the Camino where the ending point is the famous Abbey Church of Saint Foy. We had picked up a hitchhiker on a smouldering afternoon on our drive into the valley and she had bequeathed us her walking stick and shown us how to find The Way. A very special memory for both of us.

our kids through
The start of Spring is an absolutely treacherous time for Aussies. Not because of the snakes or spiders that start to emerge from their winter hiding holes. Theyāre the least of our worries. Itās not down on the ground you need to look at all but up in the trees. New-parent magpies becoming terrifyingly aggressive and swoop, peck and dive bomb the most unwitting outdoor goer. Itās an absolutely frightening Hitchcock-esque experience when it happens to you personally but when it happens to your kids, and youāre 50 metres behind them on the track, all you can do is helplessly watch (/cackle evilly and hysterically) as Mother Magpie makes her attack (over and over and over and over again until youāre well clear of her nest š š). Itās an Aussie kidsā rite of passage and it happened to these two today (over and over and over and over š š). Donāt believe us?! Check out our story!
P.s thank God for helmets!

Happy Fathersā Day to all the Dads (in all their forms), and especially to this one who carried all of our belongings around the entire globe on his back and at times, the girls on his front. He carries the lot of us a lot of the time actually. Weāre grateful for him (obviously) and for my Dad too who is a total legend... He doesnāt carry us anymore but he bakes and makes and builds and comes along for the ride, always. Happy Fathersā Day!

Sarlat-la-CaneĢdaā£
ā£
Easy on the eye and easy on the taste buds! Weāre sticking with the Dordogne area and including Sarlat as one of our fave villages. ā£
ā£
The Sarlat Market is second to none and has some of the best cheeses in all of France... true story: once we blew two full days of our entire budget on cheese. Right here. The girls always left the market with full bellies though barely spent a cent... producers were so eager for the little people to sample their offerings and so delighted by their smiles and responses they often refused to take compensation. We love French people/cheese/markets/villages (as if weāve kept that secret!).

La Roque-Gageacā£
ā£
This place is practically a post card! Set on the banks of the Dordogne, backgrounded by the most dramatic troglodyte fort. Think perigord roofs, Renaissance style chateaus and the glistening Dordogne below. The walk up the hill to the fort weaves within an exotic, tropical style garden (strange but it works) and down below, on the banks of the river, is the perfect picnic spot in the shade. Itās a short drive from here to Beynac Castle and the Gardens of Marqueyssac which are both absolutely worth a visit. If you visit the gardens you might see my outline in the ancient box woods (I fell, of course š¤¦š¼āāļø).
šEGUISHEIMšā£
This was our first āplus beaux villageā and one we stumbled upon without knowing that plus beaux villages were even a thing! We were totally delighted by its medieval era everything... tiny witches were hung on tiny doorways and behind the commune there are vineyards galore (hello Alsace wine). A little hike from the walled village will take you to three ruined castles dating between 1000 and 1200AD and itās worth it (especially if the reward is a glass of crisp white Alsace region white š).
