Last week we looked at the ebullient Curtain of the Sun, with its bright flames and bursts of warm colour. Now we meet its lunar twin, the Curtain of the Moon, also designed by John Coburn but destined to hang in the Drama Theatre.
The Curtain of the Moon weighs nearly 60 kilograms, is 5 metres in height and 17 metres wide ⚖️
Coburn kept the shapes of this tapestry deliberately vague and open to interpretation. What do you see when you look at it?

John Coburn’s Curtain of the Sun 🌞 was commissioned by Peter Hall in 1969 to adorn the stage of the Joan Sutherland Theatre.
One of the world's largest tapestries and certainly the world's most impressive stage curtain, Coburn's Sun has risen and set on some of the greatest Australian opera stars in recent memory, including Dame Joan Sutherland herself. If those threads could talk... 🎭
The tapestry is now safely stored in our archives and hung for special occasions, such as the May 2019 public viewing showcased in these images. Posting times
