We all know craneflies; gangly, long-legged insects. Mildly annoying but harmless. But did you know there are 327 species of Cranefly aka Daddy Longlegs in Britain? The one you’ve most likely seen is probably Tipula paludosa. Each autumn this cranefly emerges in huge numbers, finds a partner, mates, lays eggs and dies. The eggs hatch into underground larvae (‘leatherjackets’) which feed on grass roots.
