Steven Holl describes the concept of the new Winter Visual Arts Building at Franklin and Marshall College: “[We] are very happy about the opening, virtually, of our Franklin & Marshall Winter Arts Center. . . I would like to just say a few things about the concept: Basically . . . my first sketches were about Ben Franklin’s kite being stuck in the trees when he was trying to discover electricity, which was a silly sketch; but then I had another revelation, and that is the trees are the largest thing on this campus, and I made the actual geometry of the building concave response to the diameter of these trees. . . We realized this building in 4 years.” The lightweight, two-storey ‘box-kite’ steel frame sits on two ground floor concrete rectangles to create the dramatic cantilevers and arced geometry with precision and economy. The new Winter Visual Arts Building opens at Franklin & Marshall College. Franklin & Marshall celebrated the completion of the Winter Visual Arts Building with a virtual toast for donors, faculty and staff, where Professor Kostis Kourelis stated: “our new building is itself a philosophical machine.” On the historic campus, the new arts building takes shape as a raised pavilion formed by the site’s 200-year old trees, the oldest elements on campus. A new campus destination for all students, the building’s spaces aim to evoke the creative energy involved in teaching and making art. The Architectural Library, Archive and Research Building was built in 2019 and houses the entire architectural archive and library of Steven Holl Architects. When it opens to the public in the summer of 2021, it will be a space for study and research for academics and architects. Thrilled to announce that the new Nancy and Rich Kinder Museum Building at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston will open to the public on Saturday, November 21, 2020. The Kinder Building is dedicated to presenting works from the Museum’s international collections of modern and contemporary art. It will open with the first comprehensive installation of these works. In addition, eight major site-specific works will be inaugurated at the time of the opening. Steven Holl Architects has received a second interior design contract, to begin work in September, for the iCarbonX project in Shenzhen, China. The 200-meters-tall and the 150-meters-tall tower complex is currently under construction. This project promises architectural excellence at a large scale. The exhibition “Steven Holl: Making Architecture” travels to Bellevue Arts Museum outside of Seattle, Washington. The museum, which was designed by Steven Holl Architects and opened in 2001, is the seventh stop on the exhibition’s international tour, after shows in New York, Seoul, Nanjing, Shanghai and Tokyo. The conversation will be hosted on Zoom tonight at 5pm PST, and will be followed by a moderated Q&A with the audience.
