Early morning scenes as Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson react to winning the 2020 in Economic Sciences. The two professors are neighbors, so Wilson delivered the news to Milgrom when the prize committee couldn’t reach him. “I don’t think it changes things for me very much,” says Milgrom. “I do research, I instruct my students the best I can.”

Stanford's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and place-based training ground for effective environmental stewardship — a center of discovery, discussion and community that connects researchers from all over the world along with thousands of students from Stanford classes, local K-12 schools, community colleges and outside universities.
Even during the coronavirus pandemic, much of the preserve's public outreach continues online. Stanford experimental physicist Monika Schleier-Smith was honored with a $625,000 MacArthur Fellowship for her imaginative approach to studying many-particle quantum systems. “Creativity is often viewed as something that comes entirely from within, but it’s so important to be in a stimulating environment that gives opportunities for noticing patterns or connections between what might seem to be disparate areas of research,” she says. “I’ve been very fortunate to have that kind of environment at Stanford, where I can bounce ideas off of students and colleagues and make those ideas better.” More at the link in our bio.

Monika Schleier-Smith, a quantum physicist, was working from home and awaiting another participant in a Zoom meeting when she decided to accept a call from an unknown number. Forrest Stuart, a sociologist who studies race, poverty and inequality in the U.S., was in the shower. He jumped out to pick up the phone expecting to hear the voice of one of his former mentees, from a youth violence prevention program on the South Side of Chicago. Instead, both Stanford scholars were stunned to hear they’d won $625,000 “genius” grants to “pursue their own creative, intellectual and professional inclinations”—no conditions attached.
