I want to see people treated as humans rather than being discarded and lost in a system that actively discredits their humanity... 🌸Measure J🌸 is designed to start combating systemic racism by reallocating funding towards affordable housing, mental health, good jobs and youth/community programming. @reimagineLA Measure J will amend L.A. The clubs are closed. The dungeons are closed. Take a date to the protest ✨🍄🌸 - I've grappled with my fair share of exhaustion with the news, protests, fear, anxiety over the course of this year - buffeted, as always, by worrying I'm not doing enough. I find myself sighing and turning off the news, and then I realize what a privilege it is, to be able to turn shit off, knowing it won't necessarily still come after you. I can feel my brain going numb by the clinical sound of journalist's droning and wordy instagram infographics. Maybe it's time to go back to the source. The weekly @blmlosangeles event at the Hall of (in)justice isn't just a protest-- it has become the only forum where families of the 622 victims of police brutality can continue to go to shout their pain, interface with other families in pain, ask questions, demand justice, find joy and community in a matrix of oppression, and they need to be heard. They have requests of each other and us. If you are able, come out and sit, listen, re-access what is happening from people who are feeling it first, who have dedicated their lives to creating powerful rhetoric around injustice/brutality in our communities and the political imagination. Bring your physical body into the mindspace. Bring a friend. Bring a date! It's a lot more real, enlightening and healing than just scrolling through the madness online, wondering who to believe and what more you can take. A lot of this is beautiful, edifying, poetic, energizing, joyful--as an artist looking for direction in a crumbling landscape, a lot of it has helped me direct my thoughts and energy in more effective ways, has helped me understand how we all fit together, and who needs help and why. ~ As always thanks to @polartropica for keeping me involved and encouraging growth.
