At 15 West 61st Street in Manhattan, the Park Loggia’s self-shading masonry facade distinguishes the building while enhancing its environmental performance. An integrated micro-column structure allows for flexible interiors. Many units feature loggias, which weave the outdoors into daily life while offering views of Columbus Circle, Broadway, and more.

Next up in our ongoing series of contemporary views of historic Chicago projects: the Brunswick Building. Completed in 1965, the 35-story tower utilizes a tube-within-a-tube structural system wherein rigid, hollow tubes make up the core and perimeter—bracing the building and allowing column-free interiors. At its base, widely spaced columns create a large, open loggia at the building entrance—connecting the tower to the streetscape and facing the plaza of the Daley Center across the street.

New shot, old classic. @daveburk caught this view of the DeWitt Chestnut while out on assignment in Chicago. Built in 1965, the 42-story apartment building introduced the framed tube structural concept—a revolutionary approach that still informs tall building design today. Closely spaced columns of reinforced concrete help absorb horizontal wind loads, while allowing flexibility in the placement of interior columns and more options for the apartment layouts inside.
We’re revisiting DeWitt Chestnut and other historic SOM projects to capture them in a contemporary context. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.

Kicking off the new @nfl season with a throwback to the Atlantic Health Training Facility. Home to the @nyjets training and business operations, the complex includes corporate offices, seminar spaces, a fitness room, a medical training center, and five fields—four outdoor and one inside a 100-foot-tall field house. The facility’s completion in 2008 marked the first time the entire Jets organization operated from the same location.

Across the two 36-story towers comprising the residential complex, six sky gardens introduce greenery, outdoor lounge areas, and sky pools at varied intervals. Sculpted aluminum external sunshades on the facades reduce direct solar radiation, acting as light shelves to draw indirect sunlight into the apartments. It’s Skyscraper Day! The date of September 3 commemorates the birth of Louis Sullivan, the father of skyscrapers, who was born in 1856. Sullivan’s pioneering collaboration with Dankmar Adler in the late 19th century led to the construction of stunning steel-frame buildings such as the Chicago Stock Exchange and St. Louis’ Wainright Building.

We’ve designed quite a few skyscrapers of our own over the years and just recently rediscovered this photo from the early 1970s in our archives featuring the Marine Midland Center in Buffalo (center) with Sullivan and Adler’s Prudential (Guaranty) Building in the foreground (right).

When a local newspaper asked Buffalo native Gordon Bunshaft a decade after his successful expansion of the @albrightknox what he thought of his hometown’s architecture, he responded, “Well, Louis Sullivan's Prudential Building I think is your best one." 🏆

But it is equally critical to continue monitoring the results of policy implementation. It was 52 years ago that Whitney Young Jr. challenged the AIA to implement positive change for greater inclusion of the disenfranchised in America. We have been here before; let’s not be here again in 50 years. This past month has been a roller coaster of hope and anguish and renewed reflection.
