Top tenor
Happy birthday to the late, great tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who was born on this day in 1935. Pavarotti was one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century, making his international debut at the Royal Opera House in 1963.
He went on to become a hugely popular and internationally known opera star, achieving a large following due to his recordings and television appearances and ultimately helping expand the popularity of opera worldwide.
He is pictured here in 1976 performing the role of Rodolfo in La boheĢme alongside Kiri Te Kanawa as MimiĢ.
Russian around
We're delighted that The Royal Opera's production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is now available to listen to in full! Shostakovichās masterpiece focuses on the wife of a provincial merchant who feels entrapped in life. She leaps into an affair, which is the starting point of an unravelling tragedy.
The work became highly controversial after Stalin attended a performance in 1936 and it was vigorously condemned in the state press.
Eva-Maria Westbroek leads a starry cast, joined by Brandon Jovanovich and Sir John Tomlinson. Listen now via BBC Sounds!
Look before you leap
If you tuned in, we hope you enjoyed Friday's extraordinary event, 'The Royal Ballet: Back on Stage'!
The evening saw the full Company take to the stage for the first time in seven months and the programme featured incredible performances of works including Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, La Fille mal gardeĢe and more.
It will be available on demand for 30 days so if you missed it (or you'd like to watch it again) head to stream.roh.org.uk now. Enjoy!
Too hot to Handel
There's just one week to go until our stream of 4/4, a specially-curated evening from The Royal Opera!
The show will feature works by Handel, Gruber, Barber and Britten, directed by Adele Thomas, Deborah Warner, Richard Jones and Antony McDonald. Singers will include Allan Clayton, Christine Rice, Alexandra Lowe and Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha.
Pictured here is renowned baroque specialist Christian Curnyn, who will be conducting Handelās cantata Apollo and Daphne.

Verdi exciting stuff
Happy birthday to Giuseppe Verdi, born on this day in 1813!
Verdi was one of the greatest operatic composers. His instincts for melody and thrilling drama have ensured the enduring popularity of many of his 28 operas, which include Rigoletto, La traviata, Don Carlo and Otello.
Pictured here is mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry performing in Aida back in 1968. Set in Ancient Egypt, this work from 1871 is a timeless story of love and betrayal against a backdrop of war.
