Before we conclude the RIBOCA2 Online Series of Talks and Conversations, we would like to draw your attention to a noteworthy star and intellectual force in our curatorial team - Associate Curator @slemoslemos Sofia Lemos who has been behind the RIBOCA2 Public Programmes. 💫
The series has brought together outstanding thinkers, researchers, and writers conversing about numerous practices and approaches of diverse ways of being, thinking and doing.
Originally from Portugal, and now living between Nottingham and Berlin, Sofia has been involved in the research and coordination of exhibitions, public programmes, and publications for various institutions, including Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires, NTU CCA in Singapore, PDRAF in London and MACBA in Barcelona. She is also Associate Editor of The Contemporary Journal, and her writings on contemporary art and culture have featured in various publications, artists' catalogues, and monographs. She partook in the Synapse Curators’ Network 2015 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt and has been shortlisted for the 2019 edition of the Lorenzo Bonaldi Art Prize for young curators.
🧡 We are more than happy and proud to have had Sofia with us. For Sofia's reflections about the series as well as a proposal on desirable FUTURES - check in next week. Something’s cooking!
#ивдругвсерасцвело
🔮 The glossary-based series of talks and conversations began with ENDINGS and now comes to a close with possible FUTURES. Away from those thoughts of ends and abrupt ruptures, the speakers and presentations have called for a development of alternative approaches and sensibilities that urge new habits and practices of attention, invention, and experimentation against the calculative logics and rationalities of late modernity’s futures. These 20 weeks have mapped the entangled rhythms of reimagining ourselves as complex presences set within a network, and re-enchanted those thought processes. How do we think about our future scenarios? How can we build more liveable futures?
⠀
✔️20 Weeks 20 Questions drawn from each of the contributions:
1. Can the end of a world make space for new beginnings?
2. What is the role of language in world-making?
3. What new vocabularies and practices of being human do we need today?
4. Can we imagine more liveable futures in the ruins of late capitalism?
5. Why is it relevant to talk about worlds and futures in the plural?
6. How do we foster new aesthetic gestures after the end of a future?
7. How might forms of practice that meld perceiving, sensing, feeling and knowing support world-building narratives?
8. What role might artists and artistic research play in this process?
9. How do practices of attention, invention and experimentation help us develop new sensibilities?
10. Can utopian thinking lead in the making of different social formations?
11. What might we learn from the forms of solidarity enacted between the Baltic countries, during the pandemic and in the global uprisings in support of Black lives?
Full question list in English, Latvian and Russian 👉🏻: https://ej.uz/20questions
#ивдругвсерасцвело
The world's democracies are caught in a constant slippage between facts, opinions and beliefs, where we find falsehoods and deceptions trumping truth. How are facts and fictions produced?
What if rather than fact and fiction, we thought about ficting and facting? And what is the role of art in inventing new practices?
⠀
📡
Tune in to the penultimate episode of the RIBOCA2 Series of Talks and Conversations, this week considering the keyword FICTIONS with author McKenzie Wark’s lecture: “Ficting and Facting”, premiering tomorrow at 7PM EEST.

・・・
We are excited to start sharing with you "Biennials in times of Covid19", a series of interviews collected over the past few months among our members to discuss the difficulties of staging a large scale event such a biennial during these times. Primarily the focus is of course on the ongoing pandemic, however other locally specific but globally relevant themes have emerged as well.
Some of the contribution like the one with which we are launching today, with Agnyia Mirgorodskaya @i.am.agniya (founder and commissioner of RIBOCA, @rigabiennial ) will include videos, others will be limited to a text, but through all emerges both the critical moment for biennials as well as their resilience and readiness to rethink the model in order to safeguard both audience and artists/curators involved in the making of them.
We hope these contributions can spark a wider discussion so whether you're an artist or curator involved in biennials on show currently or in the making we would love to hear from you!

We are very glad and happy to see that our summer collaborative work with @moussemagazine will bring you thought through reading material by way of some beautiful excerpts of selected talks from the RIBOCA2 Public Programmes repertoire, opening this chapter with Federico Campagna. Please follow the published contributions and do not forget to tune in this evening for another mind-expanding talk. On this occasion by Vinciane Despret 🐦
@moussemagazine
・・・
According to philosopher , the world is ending but we shouldn’t be too worried about it. Campagna calls for taking up the challenge to look at ourselves already as a past object, not as a present one, but especially to leave “fertile ruins” behind—ruins that will allow so called "post-future adolescents" to shape the field of what is possible to do, think, and imagine, to “make world” differently. In the context of RIBOCA2 the 2nd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, “and suddenly it all blossoms,” curated by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel @rebeccalamarchevadel - Sofia Lemos @slemoslemos converses with Campagna unveiling practices of “world making.”
Have you been listening to the birds sing to each other recently?
🐦🦉🦩🐤🕊
After leaving her window open one late winter morning, key thinker in the field of animal studies, Vinciane Despret was enthralled by the song of a blackbird encapsulating the pure form of importance upon its little back.
🦜🦜🦜Tune in on Thursday, September 17th for Despret’s talk “‘Phonocene’: Bird-singing in a multispecies world”, which proposes to shift our awareness from the pleasure of birdsong, to consider the assumed definition of one’s territory. Territory not as a place of exclusion, but where several different languages form a diverse community far more varied than we can imagine, offering new ways of re-imagining how humans and animals relate to one another.
Note: this talk is in French, with subtitles in English, Latvian and Russian available.

There are some exceptional weeks that linger in our minds longer. These past three weeks will travel throughout the time and the memory with the presence of warmth, and appreciation for more than a bit. It would be humble to say that we are amazed by the number of visitors - more than 21,000 people attended RIBOCA2 💥💥💥
Here’s just a fragment of that wonderful kaleidoscope made of all the moments, experienced and shared with you throughout the last day in Andrejsala. Warm and most sincere thank you for joining this journeys and for being a part of it.

Šis ir pavisam neliels ieskats no tā visa iepriecinošā, ko manījām noslēdzošajā svētdienā. Sirsnīgs paldies par pievienošanos šim ceļojumam.

: What does it mean to make a virtue of the absence of works from a major exhibition? Is reframing an exhibition decimated by Covid-19 making the best of a bad situation, or a symptom of the overreach that treats works as interchangeable parts in an exhibition-as-artwork? Novuyo Moyo reports on the 2nd Riga Biennial.
