âGrowing up I never saw myself represented in the media so I always used to draw white characters because that was all that was around me. I didnât know what a Black superhero looked like or how diverse we could be so I decided those were things that werenât meant for us. However, that started to change in my last year of University, the same year the BLM movement took root. For the first time I started questioning what was happening to my people and how my own experience as a Black person had affected my whole life. Through my art I hope to change our narrative and provide that representation we lacked as children.â - @zolwia

Kgabo Mametja is a creative whose work can be described as bold and unapologetic. She studied visual communications at Vega where she developed an interest in commercial art and, more specifically, its values around accessibility. This interest was the catalyst that drove her to search for ways to make her design work a little more playful. It was at this point that she taught herself how to illustrate. Her career started off in advertising, where she worked as a designer while continuing to hone her skills as an illustrator through personal projects. She took the leap into working for herself in March 2019.
This move gave her the opportunity to work with clients like Penguin Random House, Refinery29, 947, and Puma often under the moniker, Saint Rose.

Exactly 6 years ago the Ferguson Riots began in response to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by police on August 9, 2014. Six years later and things havenât changed, so we continue to fight. Michael Brown should still be alive today. We must never stop fighting for him and for all Black Lives everywhere.
