My mom.⁣ ⁣ She was always there for me. She took care of me during my early childhood when I was sick with asthma. She attended all of my Little League games even though I was the kid stuck in right field and batted ninth.⁣ ⁣ For many years, she worked the overnight shift as a nurse, but still managed to cook us dinner and put us to bed before going to work at 11pm. Then, she’d be back in the morning to cook us breakfast and get us off to school.⁣ ⁣ We didn’t have a lot of money, but she and my dad managed to take us on a trip to the World’s Fair in New York, then on to Washington, D.C. in 1965. We visited the White House and waved to Lady Bird Johnson when she rolled down the window of her limousine as she drove past.⁣ ⁣ She met President Obama for the first time in 2010, and then again in 2013 when Patti and I were married in the Rose Garden. When I showed her Chuck Kennedy's picture of her touching President Obama’s face after the ceremony, I jokingly told her that only women over the age of 80 were allowed to touch the President’s face without intervention from the Secret Service.⁣ ⁣ A few years ago, Joe Biden called her to wish her happy birthday. When I asked her what they had talked about, she couldn’t really remember. But the VP had taken notes of their call so he sent her a hand-written note to remind her. The VP had apparently told my mom that I was such a fine man and my mom had replied, “Mr. Vice President, I also have two wonderful daughters. I thank God everyday that I have them.” When I next spoke to her, she told me, “I received a love letter from Joe Biden.”⁣ ⁣ I had a flight scheduled to visit her in March, but had to cancel because of COVID. Though I haven’t been able to see her this year, we were able to FaceTime on a regular basis thanks to the attentive staff at her nursing home in New Bedford. I’m not sure she fully understood why I wasn't able to visit her.⁣ ⁣ When we chatted the other day, she was joking around as usual and sent her love to my family.⁣ ⁣ Lillian Souza passed away this morning, suddenly but peacefully. ⁣ ⁣ My mom. I miss you already.

Eleven years ago today, Bo celebrated his birthday. ⁣ ⁣ Oh, also earlier that same day, President Obama was awakened with the news that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize. (He won it; virtually anyone can get nominated.)⁣ ⁣ As he made his way to the Oval Office that morning, the permanent residence staff lined the ground floor hallway to congratulate him. They didn’t need to social distance or wear masks. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣

@joebiden was a Vice President who listened to women. ⁣ ⁣ As President, ditto. ⁣ ⁣ for a POTUS who listens. ⁣

A POTUS who was also the fly-swatter-in-chief. ⁣ ⁣ because we can’t have a VP who has a fly land on his head and lets it sit there for like three minutes. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣

I beg to differ. ⁣ ⁣ Your favorite President, middle. ⁣ ⁣ Our next favorite President, at right. ⁣ ⁣ Future favorite President at left?⁣ ⁣ ⁣

Four years ago today, a lot happened. ⁣ ⁣ President Obama met with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate about Hurricane Matthew. ⁣ ⁣ Traveled to Chicago where he early voted and greeted others in the lobby. ⁣ ⁣ Oh, also on this day, his administration released a definitive statement that Russia was attempting to interfere in the 2016 election (Republican leaders in Congress refused to be part of the statement.)⁣ ⁣ 30 minutes later, the infamous Access Hollywood tape surfaced publicly. ⁣ ⁣ 90 minutes later (coincidence?), WikiLeaks released a trove of emails from the Clinton campaign. ⁣ ⁣ because, well you know. ⁣
