One of the greatest gifts of growing up in the far North was the opportunity to learn from indigenous elders. On this I remember and give thanks for the time I spent immersed in the experience and wisdom of indigenous people in the Arctic and around the world. A Greenlandic Inuit hunter stands at the ice edge; motionless, patient, staring through eyes that have seen far more than we could ever fathom. In his patient wait, he is aware, and calm. Despite the horrors of colonization, his people still hold a deep knowledge of how their world works and they still are in tune with their environment. There is so much to learn from them.
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving. It can be difficult to stay positive during such unprecedented times, but the exercise of giving thanks is more important now than ever. When we take a moment to recognize all of those things in life that we are grateful for then it opens us up to more clearly see the road ahead. Today, I am grateful for my time spent in nature with wild animals doing wild things, the global awakening that appears to be taking place to fight for a healthier planet, the 30 employees at @sealegacy and @onlyone, lead by the one and only @mitty who believes whole heartedly in working towards change for good, the people and organizations who support us as we gain traction and most of all, I am grateful for you, your conviction and your willingness to lend your name, your voice and your passion to important causes. We are in this together and we are making a difference.
I often say storytelling is the key to inspiring action. What is also true is that participating in our society by casting your vote is one of the actions I hope to inspire with the stories I tell. "The right to vote" is a phrase we all recognize, but I fear our gradual abdication of that right may soon see it become a privilege afforded only to a select few. The natural world you and I both love benefits when we stand up and demand it be prioritized â visit the link in my bio for information on when, where, and how to vote. Not a bad view in Maryland as we get office work done in between bursts of refitting the SeaLegacy 1. Her maiden voyage is in less than a monthâs time.
// 'Alpha' // Today's second new release into my limited edition fine art catalogue is an encounter from nearly a decade ago that I remember like it was yesterday. The serenity that befell me as I sat with this female sea wolf, patiently waiting for the ocean to retreat from the intertidal zone and expose its many fruits, was once in a lifetime. My greatest frustration as a photographer is that my images never adequately communicate the true breadth of emotion I feel in the moment, but I will continue to try, so long as you continue to let me. As always, I am grateful for and humbled by your support. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire fine art catalogue, please visit the link in my bio. â
// 'Sea Tribe' // I am excited to announce the first of two new pieces to be released into my limited edition fine art catalogue this weekend. Coastal wolves are very dear to me. I have spent nearly a decade documenting them with @natgeo, and they are my fellow Canadians â native residents of the many islands scattered along the ancient coastlines of British Columbia. Intimate encounters such as this one, captured less than a month ago after earning their trust, are another reminder that apex predators are rarely the vicious killers we make them out to be. I hope works like this, and the second release launching later today, help paint them in a new light so we might finally recognize them as unique and wonderful denizens of the natural world, worthy of our respect and protection. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire fine art catalogue, please visit the link in my bio. â
Today, I am incredibly excited that we are releasing two new fine art pieces. Please go to the link in my bio to sign up to our newsletter and learn more about the announcement. This image is not one of the new releases, however, I sure loved spending time with this female coastal sea wolf. She was playing out on the open beach with another female wolf and I somehow was stuck in the middle which is every photographerâs dream. After a while, she went and rested in the intertidal zone to wait for the tide to fall so she could access the oceanâs bounty and that is when the fine art moment revealed itself.
Without a plan to address a global, existential issue such as climate change, despair is quick to settle in. Summoning the courage to act despite the odds can be a more difficult road to travel, but it is the only path to victory. I have chosen this path. @mitty has chosen this path. As ambassadors of Prince William's @EarthshotPrize, we are standing in solidarity with many of the world's most brilliant scientists and activists, and there is room for you to join us. Each year until 2030, @EarthshotPrize will recognize five recipients for their ideas to solve the world's greatest environmental challenges, an initiative we hope will launch a decade of concrete solutions for lasting change. Click the link in my bio to learn more about this ambitious movement, so that we may forge ahead together. With @kensingtonroyal and @davidattenborough.
// 'Stunning Attack' // As an artist, I'm not supposed to reveal which pieces I like the best, but sometimes I can't help myself. Of all the whale tails I've been lucky enough to catch throughout my career, this humpback, aggressively diving on a ball of herring just below the surface in Andfjorden, Norway, remains my favourite. The detail in the undulating sheet of water that cascades across the frame is mesmerizing on screen, but truly stunning when printed at 40 x 60 inches. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire fine art catalogue, please visit the link in my bio.
âWe made it!â Cristina (@mitty) telling the entire @sealegacy team that we just completed our 6000km drive from Vancouver Island, BC to Annapolis, Maryland to arrive at the SeaLegacy 1. We are here for the next month to help wrap up the refitting and provisioning of this small but mighty media machine in the name of conservation. Stay tuned as we make our our preparations and thank all of our incredible supporters. .
I remember when it was rare to have a day off from shooting for @natgeo. @mitty and I would sneak away on assignment for @sealegacy and shoot to our hearts' and souls' content. These fantastic sea lions could not have put on a better show. They wreak havoc on the ocean floor, which makes shooting tough, but who cares â fun is fun. With @mitty and hundreds of sea lions off the shores of Vancouver Island, BC. Follow @sealegacy to see more photographs and videos from below the thin blue line.
