Happy birthday to Robert Mangold, whose sixteenth exhibition with Pace, "Recent Paintings 2017–2019," is on view at our New York gallery through October 24.

Mangold rose to prominence in the 1960s as one of the most original and incisive voices shaping the polemics on the new painting of the time. In its evolution, his work never becomes predictably linear or dogmatic. Rather, it remains open to the surprising twists and turns of his intuition and curiosity, always referring to his earlier works and often reexamining the questions previously raised.

During his decade-long involvement in the Hourloupe cycle, Jean Dubuffet prepared models and precise specifications for architectural completion. The placement of "Tour aux récits" in this new location achieves Dubuffet’s desire for the work to be realised in a cityscape. A series of photo montages by the artist reveals that he imagined the work to be ideally situated between two blocks of flats, a location comparable to Smithson Plaza. Afro-Brazilian artist Sonia Gomes, now on view in our online and in-gallery presentation for @friezeartfair, repurposes found or gifted materials to make assemblages that are more than the sum of their parts. Made in 1999, "Untitled," seen here, exemplifies the artist’s ability to give simple materials new life.

Though the repeated gesture of adding variegated scales, she builds up a biomorphic, dynamic, dimensional form with an open ring of sharp “teeth”. As a child, Gomes observed as her maternal grandmother, who was a faith healer and midwife, performed rites of Brazil’s African diaspora using sacred objects. The animism of these cultural objects stayed with Gomes, inspiring her to infuse sculptural pieces like Untitled with vitality and magic.

Premiering this coming Monday, October 12, and subsequently airing every other Monday, Pace On Screen will holistically explore the ways in which artists think through their time and place, connecting the personal development of form and content with a permanently changing society. Featured films include: "The Artist’s Studio" featuring Jean Dubuffet; Lynda Benglis’ "Now" and "Female Sensibility;" "Nevelson in Process" featuring Louise Nevelson; Vito Acconci’s "The Red Tapes;" and "Islands" featuring Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

A new work by @torkwasedyson is featured in our presentation for @friezeartfair, now on view online at the link in our bio and at our gallery in London. Dyson’s multidisciplinary approach to artmaking interrogates historical and existing infrastructure and architecture, particularly how Black and Brown bodies compose, perceive, and negotiate space.

Materiality extends to color and texture, as seen in the opaque black of Dyson’s wall-mounted sculpture presented here. In this work, she harnesses wood and string to produce spatially dynamic, geometric forms. The artist’s use of unmodulated black paint speaks to her exploration of the ways in which space is perceived and negotiated.

Opening today at our gallery in East Hampton is an exhibition of works by @elmgreenanddragsetstudio—the collective’s first exhibition with Pace since joining the gallery in June.

On view through November 15, the presentation features five recent and new works, as well as an offsite outdoor sculptural installation. The exhibition invites viewers to create their own narratives, responding to implied actions and emotions suggested in the selection of works, where traces of presence and absence are finely balanced and where gestures both bold and intimate are interwoven.

Over her seven decades of artmaking, Benglis has been celebrated for her unorthodox choices of media. "Broken Favor II," made from 2015 to 2016, puts materiality at the fore. In a playful evocation of a broken piñata, with the party favors either absent or presently being enjoyed, the vibrant "Broken Favor II" manifests Benglis’s passion for the carnivalesque, informed by her childhood experiences with Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
