On this day in 1964, 64 New Zealand athletes competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Incredibly, Sir Peter Snell and John Davies placed 1st and 3rd in the 1500m event, which is the first time two New Zealander's have medaled in the same event on the Olympic stage.⠀

Bill Baillie also competed at the Games placing sixth in the 5000m race. In 1963 he set the NZ record for the fastest distance covered in an hour, covering 20.19 km. which triathlete Hayden Wilde is attempting to break tonight at Mt Smart Stadium.
