One of our favourite experiences in New Zealand was horse riding with Wild Coast near Raglan. They have a rustic farm in gorgeous green countryside that feels far away from it all. We rode down the hill with amazing sea views and onto a wild black sand beach where we splashed in the waves and cantered on the sand.

While Simon went snowboarding in Tongariro National Park, I did an 18km solo hike on the Tama Lakes Track. Even without the snowcapped volcanoes emerging from the clouds, it was still a spectacular walk in a wild, empty and beautiful landscape to two volcanic crater lakes. New Zealand continues to astound me.

On our North Island road trip we discovered three of our favourite waterfalls in New Zealand:
- Marokopa Falls near Waitomo (with bonus rainbow!)
- Bridal Veil Falls near Raglan (which you can view from various perspectives)
- Taranaki Falls in Tongariro National Park (an easy 40 minute walk from Whakapapa village, but I recommend continuing on to the Tama Lakes).

Our latest North Island road trip was in early spring and I loved how we were able to combine beach time (like here at Little Palm Beach on Waiheke Island) with snowboarding (on a volcano no less) in Tongariro National Park. ⠀
⠀
New Zealand is so beautiful and diverse, and even after nearly a year here (!), there's still so much to explore. We're grateful we're able to do so in covid-free safety. ⠀
⠀
I'm not the best cyclist but I loved the 20km bike ride we did along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. It was fairly easy (only a few gentle hills), paved, away from the road, and had gorgeous views of the sea, beaches, farmland, and Mt Taranaki. There's even a velodrome where Simon had a quick spin!⠀
⠀
A final Mt Taranaki photo (for now!). I love how it's framed by the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge in New Plymouth, which we visited on a bike ride along the lovely coastal path. ⠀
⠀
Another photo of Mount Taranaki because I love it so much! This was hiking on the Stratford Plateau trail from the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre. Lots of magical mossy green forest then emerging for these incredible mountain views!⠀
⠀
We were supposed to be on a flight back to the UK a week ago, but New Zealand announced a last minute visa extension, so we’re staying! ⠀
⠀
While we’re sad not to see our family and friends, we couldn’t be happier about having more time in this beautiful, safe country, which truly feels like an oasis from a messy world. We’re so glad to avoid a long flight during a pandemic and arriving back in the UK just as covid cases are on the rise. ⠀
⠀
Meanwhile, New Zealand just got its second (very small) second wave under control and life returns to normal again here with no restrictions outside Auckland. We can continue to travel safely.⠀
⠀
The news came as we were on our (supposedly) final road trip up the North Island. The highlight was definitely the Taranaki region which is often overlooked by visitors. Does Mount Taranaki remind you of another mountain? ⠀
⠀
We hiked up steps for two hours to get this view of the picture-perfect peak reflected in Pouakai Tarn. It was so worth it! What a special place!⠀
⠀
Another popular destination on the Coromandel Peninsula is Hot Water Beach. ⠀
⠀
There's a natural hot spring under one section of the sand so you can dig your own spa bath!⠀
⠀
You have to visit within 2 hours of low tide and luckily for us that was at sunrise when the light was lovely and it wasn't too busy. ⠀
⠀
It's such a unique place and so bizarre to sit on a beach with steam rising up around you. ⠀
⠀
We found digging the hole challenging, though, as the sand kept caving in. Ours was more of a puddle than a bath! Even on a chilly morning, the water was so hot it kept us warm though. ⠀
⠀
We spent the last few weeks road tripping from the Bay of Islands to Wellington on New Zealand's North Island. We visited beaches, kauri forests, waterfalls, hot springs, geothermal parks with neon coloured ponds, and bubbling mud pools. ⠀
⠀
We had our first experience in months of crowded cafes and wineries, which was a shock at first, but we're now feeling very much back to normal here. The only current covid cases are people quarantined at the border, so we do feel safe. ⠀
⠀
Our favourite day on the trip was on the Coromandel Peninsula which is only 2 hours from Auckland and so beautiful (and quiet at the moment). The famous Cathedral Cove (pictured here) exceeded our expectations—two magical beaches are connected by a cave passageway. ⠀
⠀
Even though it's winter now, I still managed a snorkel at the nearby Gemstone Bay and saw a giant stingray!⠀
⠀
This week New Zealand reached an extraordinary milestone—0 covid-19 cases in the whole country!⠀
⠀
We have now moved to Level 1 of the alert system which means that life goes back to normal, except the borders remain closed indefinitely.⠀
⠀
All businesses are open, workers are back in offices, there are no social distancing requirements or limits on gatherings. Conferences and weddings and concerts and sports events can take place again.⠀
⠀
We knew we were in safe hands with Jacinda Ardern who made the decision to lock down hard and early, but we’re still astounded that 102 days after the first case here, things have returned so completely to normal. And it feels safe that they have.⠀
⠀
Last weekend we took our first overnight trip since March, heading up to Cape Reinga in the far north of the country (where this photo was taken). It was wild and beautiful and empty.⠀
⠀
Next week we finally leave the Bay of Islands after three months here (two months longer than planned). We’re sad to leave this beautiful area that was the ideal place to be “stuck”, but we’re looking forward to road tripping down the North Island to beaches, lakes, hot springs, and wineries.⠀
⠀
We’re hoping it’ll be a reset, a chance to process everything that has happened, and to get used to freedom again, at least until our visas expire in September.

Last week was all about getting used to post-lockdown life in New Zealand. While there are social distancing and contact tracing measures in place, things are feeling pretty normal now and we’re getting used to life outside our bubble. ⠀
⠀
The numbers are still looking good (only 22 active cases in the whole country) so we feel safe being out. ⠀
⠀
While it was still a pretty emotional week (the corona coaster doesn’t vanish after lockdown), we did enjoy a few wonderful day trips in our area (the Bay of Islands) including taking a water taxi to Urupukapuka Island. ⠀
⠀
It was a glorious day and we loved hiking the whole island and having stunning beaches all to ourselves. What a beautiful place!
