What could be nicer than a Sunday at home? The furnishings for Ferdinand Hodler’s Geneva apartment belong to a long tradition of interior designs that Josef Hoffmann realized for fellow artists. In 1912, at the age of fifty-nine, Hodler had reached the height of his artistic recognition and the financial success that went along with it. Around this time, he asked Hoffmann to furnish an apartment for him and his wife and daughter, Berthe Jacques and Paulette. Berthe Hodler is pictured here, being interviewed in 1953 while sitting in the drawing room.

is a campaign to conserve migratory birds and this year’s theme is “Birds Connect Our World.” To celebrate the occasion, we share this beautiful arrangement of multicolored birds by Franz Marc. Marc is perhaps best known for his depictions of animals, and was one of the pioneers of Expressionism in early twentieth-century Germany.

Our visit to the @belvederemuseum continues, and our timing couldn't be better. The Belvedere just opened a new exhibition: "IN SIGHT: Elena Luksch-Makowsky. Silver Age und Secession."
–
Who was Elena Luksch-Makowsky and where did she come from? Elena Luksch-Makowsky was born in 1878 into a wealthy Saint Petersburg artist family. She studied painting first in Saint Petersburg, then in Munich. In 1900 she married the Viennese sculptor Richard Luksch. Her first artistic breakthrough occurred during the fall of 1898 while she was staying in Dachau. Initially, her style was influenced by the Peredvizhniki group, an artist cooperative to which her father's work was attributed. She soon abandoned this style and turned to the Neu-Dachau painters and, through her brother, established close contacts with the artists of the St. Petersburg avant-garde. Luksch-Makowsky participated in Secession exhibitions in 1901, 1902, and 1903. Elena Luksch-Makowsky was one of the key figures of Viennese Modernism. At the beginning of the 20th century, all major Viennese art institutions and media featured her works. We are happy to be able to introduce her oeuvre to the wider public.

We look to the work of Franz Marc as we celebrate . The artist used animals as a motif throughout his oeuvre. He found in them a purity and innocence that suited his own search for transcendence. Today, the colorful paintings of cows and horses are among the most highly prized works by Marc, and we were so privileged to have assembled so many extraordinary examples at the Neue Galerie for our 2018 exhibition “Franz Marc and August Macke: 1909-1914."

As the seasons turn, we're all looking for that something cozy! Have you ever considered bundling up in colors from a favorite painting? Inspired by Egon Schiele's depiction of the Bohemian town of Krumau, Katie Mawson's Krumau Woolens feature gorgeous shades of green, orange, pink, and taupe, and are made of 100% lambswool and are hand-loomed and felted. Available exclusively at the Neue Galerie's Design Shop at shop.neuegalerie.org.

On this we ask: how do you like to take your coffee? A shot of espresso with a shot of milk on the side, the Kleiner Brauner walks the line perfectly for when you are craving a coffee kick but you don’t want a pile of milk to go with it or just straight black coffee.
