October is @blackachievementmonth, and therefore we share art by 5 black artists related to the theme of 'role model'. This week, weβd love to share three fragments of poems by @babfonchie with you. The themes of all three poems by this wonderful artist relate to the concepts of colour and diversity.
As you can see, the poems are in Dutch. In the first fragment, Fonchie draws attention to the inability of cameras to recognize black people, while the theme of the second fragment is intragenerational trauma and migration. In the fragment that is drawn from the third poem, Fonchie writes about applying for jobs and (the lack of) diversity in organizations. Want to read more by Babeth? She also writes for @lilith_mag and @hard_hoofd.
Every October @_ninsee_ organizes Black Achievement Month. This month the (inter)national achievements of black creators are celebrated and emphasized. Many (online) events are organized surrounding themes like diversity, black achievement, racism, inclusion and more. We highly recommend going to blackachievementmonth.nl to check out the full agenda.

Meet Babeth Fonchie. She is a poet, artist and, as she puts it, "something with human rights". She is also the author of the poems that we will share on our account tomorrow. We asked her whether she sees herself as a role model.
"If I were to describe myself, the word 'role model' wouldn't be one of the terms I'd use. However it would be wonderful if, with my work, I can offer comfort and pleasure."
"To me a rolemodel is someone who is brave enough to show themselves in all their humanity, that means the little, the ugly, the beautiful and the strange. I also appreciate it when people dare to challenge the status quo. And it's powerful when people are genuinely interested in the other."
A way to show myself, is through my poetry. Sometimes my poems are more abstract, but I hope they lead to an open conversation." Stay tuned for Babeth's poems tomorrow, or go follow her right now! @babfonchie

ββThere is something very comforting about the steps of cooking, especially when life as a singer can be so unpredictable.ββ - @veritywingate
Catch a glimpse of the daily life of our talented members and alumni of @dnoperastudio. Today the spotlight is on Verity Wingate.
Verity Wingate graduated from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and The Royal Academy of Music. She entered the Dutch National Opera Studio in the 2019-2020 season and is now in her second and final year. βOutside of work I really enjoy drawing - I create small ink designs. And I also love cooking! I cook a lot for my housemate and our friends. There is something very comforting about the steps of cooking, especially when life as a singer can be so unpredictable. Itβs nice to go home and make something that you know will be tasty and comforting!''
With our company, Verity has sung the role of Elisetta in Il matrimonio segreto and Anna in Nabucco. This season, she sings the role of Luisa Casati in Willem Jethsβ Ritratto which opened earlier this week!
Leave a message for Verity in the comments! β€οΈ

Today is International Lesbian Day.
Itβs about time we shine a spotlight on Romaine Brooks. She is a character portrayed by mezzo-soprano @misspollywally in Ritratto (as you see in the photo), but she really existed. And she was quite remarkable. Romaine Brooks (1874-1970) was an artist and sculptor. She was most famous for her portraits of women in androgynous clothing. After a brief marriage to pianist John Ellingham Brooks, she came out publicly as gay. Her longest relationship was with author Natalie Clifford Barney from 1915 till 1960. Brooks is remembered as a fiercely independant and authentic woman and artist. π€π€β€οΈπ§‘ππππ

The time has finally come! This evening, Willem Jeths' opera Ritratto about the extravagant Italian art muse and patron Luisa Casati will finally have its offline world premiere. π The video registration of Ritratto's dress rehearsal was a great online success during the lockdown and now the opera is finally performed for a live audience. β€οΈ The production is directed by Marcel Sijm, with costumes by the famous designer @jantaminiau. Will you be at the premiere? Wish the cast en crew toi toi toi for the opening night in the comments. π

'to be young gifted and black β by @sistersjanssen
During @blackachievementmonth month we share art by 5 black artists related to the theme 'role model'. We kick off with this work from Tisja and Zariah Janssen. We asked them why they picked this specific work.
"We chose this work because we really want to portray our beautiful blackness in a powerful way. This work is from our work series βto be young gifted and blackβ, inspired by the great Nina Simone. She inspires us by her beliefs that are so beautiful yet painful and relevant than ever. We just feel really young, gifted and black! Arenβt we?"
We are happy we get to share this powerful and meaningful art by sisters Ziarah and Tisja. There is a lot more to discover on their Instagram account @sistersjanssen. This work holds a special place for the artists.
"This work is important because it is one of the first works we did together as sisters. One of the first times where we combined our passion and creativity. This work represents the love, the beauty, the pride, the strength that young makers have."
Every year during October @_ninsee_ organizes Black Achievement Month.
"We think itβs beautiful that there is a month focused on the incredible black achievers in the Dutch society. Although we hope that in the future the focus on great black achievers will be all year around. Because there is just too much talent to limit al into one month."
Meet Ziarah and Tisja, better known as @sistersjanssen. These creative and powerful sisters will kick off our artist series!
Tomorrow we will share their artwork, but first we asked them about role models.
"The question we ask ourselves is who decides that you are a role model or not. What we try to do is inspire the younger generation by visually communicating our beliefs. We strongly believe in the power of a colorful future in every sense of the word.
For us, a role model is someone that inspires us to keep on dreaming, creating, someone who challenges us or sometimes makes us feel uncomfortable. Someone's beliefs who we can identify ourselves with. Someone who can make us believe that the impossible is possible, someone who is simply not afraid to stand for their beliefs.
Go follow the sisters and keep an eye out for their work tomorrow!
