Photo by @kiliiiyuyan / An Indian relay racer in Kalispell, Montana, shoots past in a blurred symphony of color. Indian relay is the sport of bareback horse racing, reinvented by the Blackfeet and quickly gaining popularity among Indigenous peoples across North America. Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, a time to celebrate the incredible resilience of the world’s first peoples. Today I see a generation of Native youth that has worked hard to decolonize, leading their communities back to revitalized identities and traditional ways of life. We are reclaiming the lands, culture, and traditional knowledge that allowed us to live closely with the natural world for thousands of years. Today is a day to remember the sacrifices of our ancestors, but also a day to give thanks to all the things that support us, and look ahead to the generations that will come after us.

Photos by @stevewinterphoto / Wildlife rangers are essential to protecting the last of our wild. Not only do they protect wildlife, they also serve the human communities who live in and around these areas. I’ve personally seen the role rangers play and how they are well trained and equipped to create safe spaces. And it’s in those spaces where beautiful things can happen–wildlife can return, schools can be built, and jobs created. But it’s heartbreaking to see how underfunded and under-resourced many wildlife rangers are–despite the physical and mental toll of being front-line defenders of both wildlife and human life. Adequate resourcing has always been a challenge, but it is especially so now, given the economic downturn across Africa. Check out @AfricanParksNetwork to see how you can help support their vital work.

Photo by @mattiasklumofficial / Fall in Dalarna: I started taking pictures in my teens. I borrowed my father's old camera and fell in love with the sensation of being able to bring moments home and relive them again and again. I still love that part! Working on landscape photography is very much like meditation for me. It becomes an intellectual, spiritual, and sensual journey once I really get into it. I took this picture outside of Ludvika, in Sweden, near my parents' summer home. Please follow @mattiasklumofficial for more of my images and films.

Photo by @erintrieb / Protestor Ayat Rashid, 20, drapes the Iraqi flag around herself, in Tahrir Square, Baghdad, Iraq. In October 2019, thousands gathered in the streets here to protest government corruption and the country's sectarian political system. For five consecutive months, Iraqi youth successfully occupied the square, which is both strategic and symbolic to Baghdad. COVID-19 brought the protests to a halt in the spring, with curfews and social distancing, but the impact of the protests continues to ripple through, and in some cases upend, the status quo. "For Iraq, I hope that the parliament dissolves, that there are no more [corrupt] political parties, and that women take their rights. We need the same rights that women have in other countries," says Rashid. For more human stories around the globe, follow @erintrieb.

Photo by @stephsinclairpix / Masia, age nine, shows off her skills during a karate class in Kabul, Afghanistan. Of the extraordinary challenges faced by humankind in 2020, the need to reimagine and build a more promising future for girls around the world is more important than ever. I’ve spent the better part of my career focused on amplifying the voices of some of the world’s most at risk girls. Today, on the eighth International Day of the Girl, let's celebrate their resiliency, strength, and power. Follow me @stephsinclairpix and the nonprofit I founded @tooyoungtowed to learn more about how we can help girls live free from violence and determine the course of their own lives.
Photo by @amivitale / This image is meant to celebrate the International Day of the Girl. Here, girls run from a sandstorm in the remote desert town of Boujbeja, Mali. "Boujbeja" means the luck of the desert, but after a severe drought in 1966, they've been fighting the constant push of the sands and must dig 70 meters underground to get water. As the climate changes, and earth grows hotter, droughts are becoming more severe, making the quest for water more and more difficult. Finding water is a task that disproportionately falls to women and girls. Collectively they spend 200 million hours every single daily seeking and hauling water for their communities, a task that steals their time and potential, which is why it's so important to support groups and organizations that make access to clean water a priority.

Photo by @EnricSala / Juan Fernández Archipelago, Chile: Humans are the most intelligent species on our planet, but we are terrible at internalizing the consequences of our actions. We can’t live on Earth without intact wild places yet we treat nature as though we have planets to spare. We need to invest in preserving our natural life support system. The bright central core of the galaxy in the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius is in the middle. In the Northern Hemisphere the galactic core is closer to the horizon, and not as spectacular as seen in the southern sky. On the lower left, in the morning light, is planet Venus.
