Surface Series 2011. Resin, fabric, printed products. 100x80x13,5cm. In display at N2 Galería. Barcelona.
Liu Guangyun was born in Jinan, Shandong Province (China) and studied Fine Arts in Beijing. Living and working between Shanghai and Mainz for about two decades now, Liu Guangyun is a transducer between continents and cultures and between different artistic media, techniques and forms of expression. Drawing, painting and objects can be found in his work as well as performance, installation art and video art. As a Chinese living in Germany Liu Guangyun alternates between modernism and tradition, between occidental and oriental values. His works are constantly revolving around questions of identity.
Liu Guangyun builds a conceptual beauty by manipulating images of female models. He uses photos of faces, which obey the aesthetic norms of the advertisement world. These faces are formed far from all real identity by means of plastic surgery. The beauty, which in former times was appreciated as an intellectual ideal and deplored by reason of its fugacity, has sunk due to an absolute flattening of the perceptive faculty, to the level of advertisement slogans. Assuming a common generally accepted norm of taste, the photos and faces of assumed private identities appear as objects of delight, longing and seduction, but they are reduced to an aesthetic bogus appearance with their blatant function as vehicles for business strategies exposed.
