invites us to honor and celebrate Native American cultures, including those who inhabited what is now present-day New York City.
When European settlers began building a town at Manhattan Islandβs southern tip in 1624, they did not occupy a landscape empty of human habitation. For 6000 years, people who called themselves the Lenape and earlier native groups had lived here, using the land and water for hunting, gathering, planting, fishing, and trading. The Lenape homeland stretched across southeastern New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania. Their matrilineal society was based on hunting, fishing, and planting. They moved seasonally among networks of local villages located along the regionβs many waterways.
The Lenape used the natural resources of the Hudson River estuary region in many ways. The plentiful oysters and clams were not just food: their shells could be turned into tools and ornaments. Stone provided materials for axe heads, arrowheads, and small cups used to hold pigments. Clay was useful for making small containers, including this small hollowed-out stone used as a paint cup, possibly to adorn bodies with vegetable or animal pigments.
