Did you know?
The term "baguette" for a handbag was coined because it was meant to fit under the arm like a loaf of bread. Learn more about fashion history in 100 Years of Fashion, MFIT’s two-part introduction to the history of fashion from the late 19th century through the 1990s.

Zinnias originated as a Mexican wildflower and are now one of the most commonly grown annuals. Known for being hardy it thus has become a symbol of lasting friendship. While the soft, draped turban was a common style in the early 1940s, this example by Carolyn Reboux is distinguished by the sophistication of its asymmetrical drape and its cluster of zinnias, painstakingly constructed of hand-painted silk and velvet petals.

The “mad” Hatter’s erratic behavior in Alice in Wonderland may have been related to his profession. Hatmakers faced significant health risks during the 19th century, due to the chemicals used on the animal furs for felt hats. This 2013 Walter Van Beirendonck ensemble, featuring a bold jacket and a painted foam top hat by artist Folker de Yong, evokes the original John Tenniel illustrations of the Hatter.
Re-visit the for our 2016 exhibition Fairy Tale Fashion.

We are saddened to learn about the death of the great Japanese designer Kenzo Takada from Covid-19. After moving from Japan to Paris in 1964, Takada gained media attention for his collections throughout the 1970s as he expanded his company. Kenzo’s colorful styles have given a sense of joy to fashion. After selling Kenzo to LVMH in 1993 and leaving the company in 1999, he continued to design and paint. The Museum at FIT is honored to have Kenzo’s work in its permanent collection. He will be missed.
Happy Birthday Donna Karan!
Born on this day in 1948, Karan first made a name for herself with her “seven easy pieces” collection in 1985, which was designed to give the working woman a fully coordinated wardrobe of (primarily black) separates that she could mix and match to wear through the work week. These denim styles could have been integrated into a coordinated Karan wardrobe to offer further options.
