Bastien-Lepage s'est fait une spécialité des scènes agrestes, loin des mièvreries pastorales dont le Salon abondait. "Les foins" suscita l'enthousiasme de Zola, qui y voyait le chef-d'œuvre du naturalisme en peinture et qualifiait son auteur de "petit-fils de Millet et de Courbet". L'artiste traduit l'épopée des campagnes françaises, et dépeint les paysans dans leur simplicité et leur accablement : la jeune femme porte sur son visage une expression hagarde, marquée par l'épuisement. Le tableau remporte un vif succès au salon de 1878. La composition en est audacieuse, photographique avec une ligne d'horizon inhabituellement haute. Ces effets de perspective accélérée, la palette claire, le cadrage rapproché sur les personnages constituent, au sein même du naturalisme, des signes de modernité. . Zola was excited by "Hay Making", seeing it as the masterpiece of naturalism in painting and the artist as the "grandson of Millet and Courbet". Bastien-Lepage has powerfully captured the epic of the French countryside and depicted the peasants in their simplicity and despondency: the young woman is haggard with weariness. The painting was very popular at the 1878 Salon. The composition is daringly photographic with the horizon unusually high. Le Bal du Moulin de la Galette est une guinguette qui tire son nom d’un moulin de la butte Montmartre. Renoir ambitionne de représenter dans le format de la peinture d’histoire une scène de loisir moderne et populaire en plein air. Le tableau aurait été peint sur le motif d’une touche rapide où quelques coups de pinceaux ou taches de couleurs suffisent à poser un objet ou un personnage, mais on connaît au moins une étude préparatoire. Cette œuvre transcrit avec brio et poésie l’animation de la danse, les conversations et les échanges de regards qui n’excluent pas les jeux de séduction. Renoir dépeint un monde harmonieux, dont la joyeuse atmosphère de fête galante rappelle "L’Embarquement pour Cythère" de Watteau que le peintre a souvent admiré au Louvre. Elle a été léguée à l'État français par le peintre et collectionneur Gustave Caillebotte. . "Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette" depicts a guinguette, or café with music and dancing, its name coming from a windmill (moulin) on the Butte Montmartre. Renoir's project is to depict a modern, open air, popular leisure scene, captured in the format of a history painting. À partir des années 1870, Alexandre Falguière poursuit simultanément une carrière de peintre et de sculpteur. "Lutteurs", sa première grande composition, lui vaut une médaille de seconde classe au Salon de 1875. Le thème de la lutte moderne, en vogue à l'époque romantique, avait connu un renouveau dans les années 1850. Après la guerre 1870, l'image du lutteur prend une autre signification : son courage doit servir d'exemple pour éduquer l'ardeur belliqueuse des jeunes citoyens. L'œuvre divise la critique de l'époque entre ceux qui méprisent la "peinture d'un sculpteur", et ceux, plus nombreux, qui reconnaissent à l'auteur le talent d'un véritable peintre. Les débats tournent également autour de la question du réalisme. Certains commentateurs, adeptes de l'antique, conspuent la trivialité du thème, n'y voyant de quelconques lutteurs de foire. Les défenseurs du réalisme en revanche se montrent enthousiastes pour la modernité du sujet et l'absence d'idéalisation. .
