Daniela Blanco won a 2020 for her greener chemical reactor that is helping to make chemical processes more sustainable. Daniela knew she wanted to be a scientist from an early age growing up in Venezuela. How we make moral decisions: In some situations, asking “what if everyone did that?” is a common strategy for judging whether an action is right or wrong. Researchers at MIT and @Harvard have shown that people use a type of reasoning known as universalization to help them make moral decisions in certain types of situations. This strategy is most applicable in social dilemmas called “threshold problems,” in which harm can occur if everyone, or a large number of people, perform a certain action. MIT senior Darya Guettler advocates for climate action and broader deployment of zero-carbon energy sources. Q: Have you taken on any new hobbies since the pandemic? A: Walking outside in nature! I definitely took the ability to walk around for granted, so now whenever I get the chance I try to spend my time outdoors. Q: What are you reading? A: I’m currently reading “Who thought that was a good idea” by Obama’s ex-Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromonaco and “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert. Q: What is something every MIT student should experience while they’re here? A: A random encounter with someone who revolutionized their field (it sounds crazy, but is definitely likely to happen), and a sunset/sunrise seen from the Bridge. Q: Where is your favorite secret spot on campus? Explain why. A: The indoor garden in the Brain and Cognitive Science building! It has palm trees, and makes me feel like I’m on vacation.
