In an exhibition that opened in September at The Bronx Museum of the Arts (@bronxmuseum), Sanford Biggers (@sanfordbiggers) excavates an American mythology. The show, titled Codeswitch, is the first survey of Biggers’s quilt-based works, and will display more than 60 of them. This series began more than a decade ago, during a commission for Philadelphia’s Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, once a stop on the Underground Railroad. Quilts, as the story goes, were a way for enslaved people on their path to liberation to share coded knowledge on their journey. Collecting quilts from the 18th and 19th centuries, Biggers began using them as canvases for his own paintings and sculptures, continuing and altering this thread of communication. That historians have disputed the veracity of the quilting legend only makes the artist’s investigation more compelling. As Biggers himself has said, “Two of my favorite materials are history and dialogue.” Photos courtesy Object Studies, and Matthew Morrocco (@matthew_morrocco)

Over the last ten years, the podcast 99% Invisible (@99percentinvisible) has been captivating listeners throughout the world by exposing the overlooked and seemingly mundane aspects of architecture and design. While the show had modest beginnings in creator Roman Mars’s (@theromanmars) bedroom, it has now grown to more than 400 episodes generating over 400 million downloads. This week, fans can also hold the show’s stories in their hands in the form of a new book titled The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design, which Mars co-wrote with digital director and producer Kurt Kohlstedt. Composed of research and reporting from the podcast as well as brand new stories, the book (illustrated by Patrick Vale (@patrickvaleartist)) highlights design considerations that often go unnoticed.

Time is a limited resource—and yet it is an equalizer in its availability to all of us. With that in mind, architect Anupama Kundoo (@anupama_kundoo) believes it is our responsibility to use it well. Kundoo, who is known for her low-impact, materially sensitive buildings across Europe and India—such as Wall House, a porous structure with lacy concrete doors and intricate brickwork—has produced a body of work that runs counter to the efficiency-driven, value-engineered nature of much of contemporary architecture. Kundoo’s work, which is featured in the upcoming exhibit Taking Time at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark (@louisianamuseum), expands notions and values of time, offering an exciting example of how architecture can embed those values in the built environment. As curator Kjeld Kjeldsen notes, “By investing time in architecture, you can make it better. It is not a question of saving time, but of taking time.” Photos courtesy Javier Callejas (@_javiercallejas)

Join us for Metropolis Think Tank Thursday on October 8th at 4:00pm EDT for a CEU accredited, live webinar on Buoyant City: Preservation, Resiliency, and Tourism in Miami Beach, hosted by Shulman + Associates.
Speakers will be Allan Shulman, Founding Principal, Shulman + Associates; Susannah C. Drake FASLA, Founding Principal, dlandstudio; Deborah Tackett, Chief of Historic Preservation, City of Miami Beach; and hosted by Avinash Rajagopal, Editor in Chief of Metropolis.
Founded as a leisure city in early 1900s, Miami Beach evolved into one of America’s leading tourism destinations. Today the narrative is shifting again: Over the next 60 years, most buildings in the city’s 22 vibrant historic districts will need to be substantially reconstructed as water levels rise due to climate change. How will this be accomplished, and what type of city will result? Can preservation, often considered an antagonist to resiliency, be redeployed as a powerful adaptive tool?

While American ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins (@baskinrobbins) is recognized in the United States by its pink and blue branding and Original 31 Flavors, the brand lives quite a different life abroad. As known in Korea, the company develops innovative, high-concept ice cream shops that double as meeting places, cafe lounges, and Instagrammable pop-up galleries. So when Baskin-Robbins South Korea (@baskinrobbinskorea) courted boutique design firm Osmose (@osmoseme) to help create a photo-worthy environment with a uniquely West Coast vibe for their new location in Seoul, the Portland, Oregon-based studio jumped at the opportunity.
Baskin-Robbins Hive Hannam, completed in March, 2020, is a free-standing, five-floor structure with low ceilings and smaller footprints on each floor. It stands out in a neighborhood with few multistory, free-standing buildings, and even more so with the addition of a vibrant exterior mural by Pattern People (@patternpeople), a Portland-based surface design studio.
