When creating her new production of Lucia di Lammermoor for the Met, director Mary Zimmerman found inspiration in the crumbling castles of the Scottish Highlands: “The strange shade of green of the outsized rooms, the bare branches above our heads, the alleyways. It felt like a place haunted by madness, the setting for a ghostly Victorian tale.” In tonight’s free Nightly Met Opera Stream, enjoy her haunting take on Donizetti’s classic bel canto tragedy—the 2009 Live in HD transmission is available beginning at 7:30PM ET until tomorrow, October 13, at 6:30PM ET.

We were devastated to learn of the tragic passing of soprano Erin Wall earlier this week from metastatic breast cancer. She was 44 years old. The Canadian-American soprano made her Met debut in 2009 as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and returned in subsequent seasons as Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2013 and the title role of Strauss’s Arabella in 2014. Celebrated in a wide variety of roles, Wall sang to great acclaim throughout North America and Europe, appearing especially regularly at Lyric Opera of Chicago, where she was a member of the company’s prestigious Ryan Opera Center. She will be remembered as not only a wonderful artist but a warm and generous colleague, and we send our deepest condolences to her husband, Roberto, their two children, and all of her family and friends.
