Before Edith Standen was a curator at The Met, she was a member of the U.S. Military's Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Division—better known today as the (or perhaps?), who rescued and restituted artworks stolen by the Nazis during World War II. 🎧 Hear her story and others in the new audio guide—narrated by —and explore more from the exhibition through our at the link in bio.

Did you know? 🎨 In 1975, the Louvre acquired “The Cross in the Wilderness,” the Museum’s only painting by Thomas Cole. It represents the culmination of the artist’s reflection on the American wilderness—a legendary archetype of grandiose, untouched nature. 🌄 A circular view shows us a landscape that is both delicate and powerful—a clearing near a small lake, a setting sun that brings out the bright colors of the forest in early autumn, a distant view of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York… 🇺🇸 A major work by Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, this painting was a source of inspiration for a whole generation of painters. You probably already know William the hippo, but did you know he had a cousin in the @museelouvre?⁣ ⁣ 🦛 The ancient Egyptians had an ambivalent relationship with hippos. When placed in tombs, faience hippos were meant to supply the deceased with regenerative power and to guarantee their rebirth.✨⁣ ⁣ Some 50 similar faience hippopotami are now scattered around the world. These bright-blue Egyptian faience figures vary in size from 9 to 23 centimeters in length.⁣ ⁣ 🔎 Unlike his American cousin, our French hippo has a unique feature—it’s four legs are connected by a strip of faience and rest on a plinth, making it the only one of its kind. Following archive research and a technical study, the plinth was removed, as it did not belong to the original work and differentiated him from his cousins!⁣ ⁣ Our two beautiful hippos are not the only link uniting the collections of the Louvre and The Met. The two museums have a lot more in common! On compte environ cinquante exemplaires d’hippopotames similaires dispersés à travers le globe. Les figurines en faïence égyptienne, brillantes et d'un bleu vif, varient de neuf à vingt-trois centimètres de long.⁣ ⁣ 🔎 Contrairement à son cousin américain, notre hippopotame français avait la particularité unique d'avoir les quatre pattes reliées entre elles par un bandeau de faïence et de reposer sur un socle. La lecture des archives et l'étude technique de l'objet ont finalement permis de le débarrasser de ce socle qui ne lui appartenait pas et le différenciait de ses cousins!⁣ ⁣ Nos deux adorables hippos ne sont pas le seul lien unissant les collections du Louvre et du MET.
