Work by Joe Tilson is featured in Marlborough’s Frieze Masters presentation @FriezeArtFair. The collection of works on view examine an array of materials, construction methods and meanings from a decade of sculptural practice beginning in the 1960s.
Tilson’s earliest works show his feeling for wood both as a material and as a subject in itself. The work Small Odeon Cut-Out depicts a characteristic emblem featured in Odeon cinemas, the painting on wood within a wood frame, creates a witty illusion of three dimensions in two, foreshadowing the artist’s fizzling constructed and painted wall-relief creations of the ensuing decades.
Other artists featured in our presentation include: , , , and .

Visit the online edition of Frieze Masters 2020 to view Marlborough’s presentation of Post-War Sculpture. The selection of artists featured includes Kenneth Armitage, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Victor Pasmore, Joe Tilson and William Turnbull.
In 1962, Kenneth Armitage developed the Pandarus series using motifs of funnels with shadows, horizontal markings and navels that he continued to revisit for the next four years. The title comes from the poem ‘Troilus and Criseyde’ where the protagonist, Pandarus, acts as a go-between orchestrating a secret affair between Troilus and Criseyde. He acts for the lovers communicating persuasion and encouragement only to ultimately fail. The funnels in Armitage’s work represent channels of communication and suggest a dark internal world. The series was first exhibited at Marlborough, London in 1965.

Maggi Hambling: 2020 opens next week at Marlborough Gallery in London. One of the series on view in the exhibition consists of intimate portraits of people gleefully laughing, where faces materialise out of fluid paint. These works nod back in time when Hambling’s Laugh paintings of the 1990’s evoked the event - the unbounded energy, the sound - of laughter. Seen in the context of her unsentimental animal paintings, these laughing faces are double-edged - the uncontrolled release of energy in the face of adversity.
The exhibition opens 15 October, please visit our website to book tickets.

Works by Victor Pasmore are included in Marlborough’s Frieze Viewing Room presentation ‘Post-War Sculpture’. The collection of works on view examine an array of materials, construction methods and meanings from a decade of sculptural practice beginning in the 1960s.
Pasmore was influenced by Naum Gabo’s ideas in his 20-year association as Consulting Director of Urban Design assisting architects of the Peterlee New Town Corporation, as well as in his use of assembled 3-D geometric forms mounted on perspex, which appear to float in space. Besides his hand-made carpentry elements in such ‘paintings’, he would incise or gouge their surface and create the suggestion of real spatial depth by contrasting expanding fields of fluid colour (which he often titled ‘developments’) which were held in check by severe black lines or blocks.
Other artists featured in our presentation include: Kenneth Armitage, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Joe Tilson and William Turnbull.

"Cross Marlene Dietrich with Francis Bacon, add a touch of Miss Marple and you get an idea of the captivating, gifted yet rather cosy personality that is Maggi Hambling."
Maggi Hambling talks to Rachel Spence in the @financialtimes about her love of oil paint, working in lockdown and the emotions behind her new show.
From 15th October, Marlborough Gallery London presents Maggi Hambling: 2020. This exhibition of recent paintings coincides with Hambling’s 75th Birthday, marking both a moment of looking in - a self reckoning - as much as a commentary on the world, responding to the seismic events of the present.
Hambling’s ‘twenty twenty’ clarity of vision, her search for the truth, is evident through several interconnecting series - from the exploration of her own existence to mankind’s inhumanity to man and nature.
Maggi Hambling: 2020, Marlborough London, 15 October – 21 November, book your tickets now via our website and Eventbrite. Read the complete article via our news page, online now.
