The Changing Hands exhibition series demonstrated the vitality and spirit of experimentation that has come to the forefront among the art practices of working today. One of the featured artists, Alan Michelson (@alan_michelson), a Mohawk member of the Six Nations of the Grand River, based his piece Phoenix, on the log print shop in New Echota, Georgia, where the Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American newspaper, was published by the Cherokee Nation. New Echota, Georgia, was the capital of the Cherokee Nation from 1825 until their forced removal in the 1830s.  The model is imprinted with text from the December 17, 1831 edition of the newspaper, which describes events leading up the forced relocation of Cherokee under the official U.S. policy of Indian Removal. The Cherokee Nation had selectively adapted to modernity in significant ways, with large, prosperous farms, a written constitution, judicial system, police force, and a higher rate of literacy than their non-Native neighbors. They exhausted every political and legal means to retain their lands and were eventually ousted after a series of legal, legislative, and executive maneuvers by the state of Georgia, the Supreme Court, Congress, and President Andrew Jackson. The unauthorized Treaty of New Echota in 1835—printed on the roof of the model—was the basis for the later U.S. Army–directed removal of some 12,000 Cherokees at gunpoint, known as the Trail of Tears. Perhaps as many as a quarter of them perished in the brutal forced march to the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Margret Craver, the first modern jeweler and metalsmith of the twentieth century was born in 1907 in Kanas. During the mid-1950s, Craver became fascinated with a seventeenth-century technique called en resille, a French term describing elements suspended within an enamel body. Craver’s interest led her to give the process a modern twist. The hair ornament she created in 1959, features completed enamel set like a jewel inside the piece and includes colored enamel and slivers of gold leaf. Not only does Brian Clarke (@Brian.Clarke_) push the boundaries of stained glass technically, but his work “ has the ability to transform consciousness,” says exhibition curator Paul Greenhalgh. Clarke’s work highlights the “ ability of material and light to explore what it is to be human.” Greenhalgh and other Clarke collaborators and friends share their reflections on the artist and his creative process in the film, “Brian Clarke with HENI,” currently featured in our exhibition, Brian Clarke: The Art of Light. @HENITalks is a non-profit initiative dedicated to sharing insights about art history from authorities in the field, as part of a broader commitment to supporting art education and widening public access to art.  ____

The 17th-century Dutch still life paintings are a driving force for Beth Lipman’s intricate three-dimensional sculptures. Lipman says, “My work pays homage to still life paintings made between the 17th and 20th centuries. These luscious historical still lifes can be contemplated on a purely formal aesthetic level or interpreted on a political, moral or theological level. Full of symbolism, they are almost always memento mori capturing a fleeting, fated moment in time when a flower bloomed or the light struck a goblet in a very specific way. Colombian mixed media artist Liliana Angulo Cortés explores the representation of Black women in contemporary culture through the lenses of gender, race, and identity. "Ever since my youth, I've always proclaimed to be, in some mysterious way that I have difficulty explaining, connected to architecture. I respond to architectural culture and to the way architects think." - Brian Clarke (@brian.clarke_ ) Brian Clarke’s integration of art and architecture has allowed him to push the boundaries of stained glass. His unique practice has led him to collaborate with leading figures in architecture, including Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Arata Isozaki, Oscar Niemeyer, and I. M. Pei to create stained glass and art installations for projects around the world. In the late 1980s, Clarke was commissioned to create a piece for the restored Victoria Quarter in the center of Leeds, England. The initial commission was for stained glass at either end of the street. However, Clarke developed the idea into a scheme to glaze over the entire street, which was pedestrianized and roofed over to form a contemporary arcade, with stained glass. Clarke’s stained glass roof measures over 400 feet long, and was the largest secular work of stained glass at its completion in 1990 and remains the largest stained glass work in Great Britain and the largest stained glass roof in Europe. _____ Victoria Leeds, Leeds, England, 1989 - 1990
