Design In An Age Of Crisis is a global OPEN CALL from @chathamhouse_organd London Design Biennale, inviting radical design thinking from the world’s design community, the public and young people. It seeks to harness the creativity that comes from crisis. We have extended the Under 18 & Young Person's Brief through to the end of the Autumn term 2020. Submit via the link in our bio.
.
.
In 2010, The Mayor of London commissioned Heatherwick Studio to design the first new bus for the capital in 50 years. The New Routemaster would need to be completely accessible and use 40% less fossil fuel than existing buses, and be affordable. One thousand vehicles were commissioned and the first 6 were on the streets in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Maggie’s commissioned Heatherwick Studio to create a new centre on the campus of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. Set in the midst of medical buildings, the site was one of the few green spaces left on the campus. The studio accentuated this space by creating the structure out of the garden itself, raising up the planted surface.

Heatherwick Studio was invited to design a public centrepiece for Hudson Yards, an 11 Hectare development on Manhattan’s West Side that sits above a rail yard. Composed of 154 flights and almost 1,500 steps, Vessel represents the intention for Hudson Yards to create a meaningful public legacy for New York City.

In 2014 Heatherwick Studio restored and transformed a pair of Victorian warehouses and viaducts to create Coal Drops Yard, a new public space and retail destination. The outcome is a dynamic new space for London designed for established companies, emerging brands and newly graduated students from the nearby Central Saint Martin’s Art School.

Eden, Singapore: a city garden in the sky is Heatherwick Studio’s first completed residential project, and sees the traditional apartment plan pulled apart, freeing up a central heart space and allowing a tropical garden to cascade from all inhabitable sides.

@WePresent highlighted the work of Cedar Pasori who created Vocal Type, a type foundry with fonts by creatives of colour that highlights important historical moments. After growing disheartened by the statistical lack of diversity in design, he decided to become part of the solution.

@WePresent highlighted the work of French architect Emmanuelle Moureaux. When she first arrived in the Japanese megacity of Tokyo over 20 years ago, she was overwhelmed by its colours.
.
.
She developed the design approach she now applies to every project, from buildings, interiors to art installations. Throughout her practice she combines layers of colors of Tokyo with traditional Japanese "shōji", space dividers made out of translucent paper and bamboo.

@WePresent highlighted the work of Cameroonian artist Jean David Nkot, whose subjects are painted against a backdrop of maps and borders, as he explored the entangled minds of migrant workers.
.
.
His work has always centered around the human condition and, following a recent residency as part of the Moving Frontiers project, his work made a natural progression onto the theme of migration.

When we think of “ceramics,” we might think of vases depicting classic historical scenes or jugs decorated with floral arrangements. Going against this common conception, @WePresent highlighted the work of Canadian artist Trevor Baird. Traditionally a comic book artist, he covers his pots with extracts from the strips he’s painted.

@WePresent showcased Theo Jansen’s Strandbeasts, his imagined wind-powered skeletons which roamed across the beach. Driven around by the wind they gather sand to create dunes which would act as dams, in order to protect the Netherlands’ coastline from rising sea levels.
