Meet Jimmy!✨ He will be present in Atelier des Lumières and would love to sign your book from 7 PM until 11 PM on the opening weekend of the 16th, 17th and 18th of October.
@atelierdeslumieres
We are still so happy to tell you about the amazing exhibition at Atelier des Lumières: the last Sentinels x Jimmy Nelson. You can visit the show from October 16th to 31st 2020.

Maasai, Tarangire, Rift Escarpment, Tanzania 2010.
The best views come after the hardest climb. Many days were spent walking behind the Maasai as they travelled the rim of the Ngorongoro crater. This highly visited African landscape is the world's largest inactive, unbroken and unfilled volcanic caldera. This explosion created a caldera approximately two and a half million years ago. It was as if I felt the ancient geology I was standing on talking to me, inspiring me to visually blend the proud ancient tradition of the Maasai as a message to the world. Lest not forget that we humans today are only a millisecond of the history of the planet. It’s power and story came long before and will long outlast whatever we do to her in our brief passing.
I sometimes feel that photography is perhaps a gentle way to shake the world. To wake us up to the beauty that still exists hidden deep in it’s stoic heart. That despite our negligence and ego there are still humans that could show us the way to better live in harmony with the natural world.
Here with the Kaluli scattered in a few small villages on the slopes of the dormant volcano of Mount Bosavi I found true solace . After each day excitedly observing this delicate almost “Avatar-esque” existence, I would fall into the deepest sleeps in the simplest of accommodation, knowing that I had witnessed briefly, in my lifetime a true state of being.

.
Q: How do you survive as a family here?
.
A: We can live mostly from the natural world – it’s a beautiful and abundant environment here. We eat from the land we walk on, and we fish from the waters we swim in. When I visit my relatives in town I see how much harder life is for them. Everything costs money, and everything is so expensive. We’ve got some money, but we only use it to buy stuff we can’t make ourselves, like soap and batteries. If my husband catches extra fish I sell them at the market along with my handicrafts to earn some money. I’m happy with the simple way of life we have here. I feel blessed.

I am most alive amongst the tallness and mightiness of natural human strength. Humbled by its power as if a servant to its cause. Although South Sudan is the world's youngest nation, the dignified Mundari who live there on the banks of the Nile originates from some of the oldest humans on the planet. Forty years ago in East Africa, a team of scientists found fossils that changed the understanding of human evolution. The Mundari are a mirror of natural human strength. A natural force, all but long forgotten in the developed world.

It's one thing to photograph people, it's another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness. The Kazakh Eagle hunters have used the golden eagle to hunt for thousands of years on the high steppes of the Altai Mountains of Central Asia. I have had the privilege to visit them on many occasions and now regard them as friends. The warmth that is bestowed on me despite the sub-zero temperatures every time I visit never ceases to melt my heart. Looking for that one definitive moment to capture the core their grandeur and greatness will mean many more visits to come. As theirs is humanness we can all be inspired by.

Wherever I go in the world I try to leave nothing behind except a trail of inspiration and light.
Herewith the Ni on the Banks Islands of North Vanuatu I was invited for a day's fishing. I delicately observed with my camera, local hunters treading through a sea that was almost untouched by humans. The bounty of fish was breathtaking and every which way I turned I was aware of how pristine these atolls were whilst also being confronted by what we as humans have taken from the oceans of the world.

Q: Do you have spiritual or religious beliefs?
.
A: That’s a complex matter. My mother is an Adventist and my father is Catholic. I grew up with the church but my parents didn’t agree with each other on religion and there was a really negative atmosphere around it. I didn’t know which way to turn. They asked me too many questions. The first missionaries here forced their religion on us and ruined our culture. They destroyed our tikis and stopped us making tattoos and wearing flowers. Nowadays there’s a fantastic revival, building on what little was left from the past.

I sense I will be forever chasing the light. The light turns what most of us think is the ordinary in to the extraordinary here in the middle of the Pacific. The 15 volcanic Islands of the Marquesas are part of French Polynesia and form a small group of volcanic peaks and towering cliffs surrounded by the bright blue ocean. Set deep in the middle of the pacific they feel as if they have been forgotten in time and place and as a result, their cultural heritage is still relatively intact. At the forefront of their history, they use the Tatu or tattoo to continually show their identity status and genealogy in a variety of shapes and symbols.

My life is shaped by what seems to be an urgent need to wander, learn and observe. To modestly follow behind the Gauchos, the colourfully dressed horsemen who have roamed the Pampas since the 1700s. Their hardiness, dignity and pride is everything I would aspire to be let alone dare to have. So I quietly mimic a connection by recording a fleeting moment in time.
