I've joined to spread the word about voting early. Before this election, I never really knew that voting early was an option for everyone, but now I’m pumped to drop off my mail-in ballot early to make sure it’s counted! I’ve signed up on BallotTrax to track my ballot (which is on its way to me as we speak).
If you've already voted early, dope. Feel free to share this art and follow @artofvotingearly to get the word out.
If not... make sure you’re registered, make a plan to vote, and make your vote count by tracking your ballot! There are so many ways to do it through the month of October: mail-in, drop off, or in-person early voting. No excuses!
Dates and voting laws vary state to state. For all the info you need to get started, visit www.vote.org
Problems at the polls? Call the Voter Protection Hotline at: 866-687-8683

I have a new online shop!! I collaborated with the fine folks at Faculty to build it and couldn’t be happier. It feels so much more “grown up” and showcases things like fonts waaaaay better (with a type testing tool and everything!) I’ve been stealthily updating images and popping some new products on there over the last month. Honestly I think having my new office made me want to level everything up professionally. It’s amazing how the spaces we spend time in can influence how we live our lives. Anyway...pumped! Go check it out jessicahische.shop

It has been so humbling to see all of the amazing art flood into (more than 1500 posts now!) It’s also starting to take on a life of its own with people posting more general “voting” art to the tag. I’m curating some of my favs over at the @riseupshowupunite account if you want to follow along (posting 3-5 a day after the kids go to bed). You are all so inspiring. And it’s such a fun way to discover so many great artists, designers, and illustrators!
This piece is now available as a limited edition letterpress print in my shop!
.
Originally designed for a Washington Post piece titled “How to Fix Democracy” from 2017. Thirty-eight artists contributed to the feature, creating whatever they though was a key solution to fixing Democracy. There is an old adage that “It’s impolite to discuss politics and religion at the dinner table”—I wanted to turn that on its head. It’s extremely important that differing viewpoints are openly discussed, shared, and debated.

I’m going to vote for Joe Biden with my whole heart. I believe he is a decent person who will listen to calls for real change. I believe he’ll put Supreme Court justices in place who will protect important women’s and civil rights laws. I believe that he will look to scientists and doctors to help us better manage the pandemic. I believe he and Kamala Harris truly care about the future of America. And I believe he’ll put Elizabeth Warren to very good use 😉
…
What the campaign needs right now is a visible show of support, rallying anyone who thinks they might sit it out or vote 3rd party to unite behind Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We’ve got to RISE UP against the racist, misogynist, would-be autocrat running our country. We’ve got to commit to SHOW UP at the polls or through our mail in ballots. And we’ve got to UNITE behind the only person with a real chance at righting the ship.
…
If you agree, join me and about 20 of my friends and colleagues by publicly declaring support for Joe Biden / Kamala Harris and, if you’re game, create a piece of art alongside us. I had a heartbreaking conversation with my daughter the other day: she told me that sometimes she looks in the mirror and wishes she had a different and more beautiful face. I nearly broke down and cried on the spot. She doesn’t watch shows that are all about superficial beauty (her favorite show right now is Jake and the Neverland Pirates). She isn’t into dolls. She’s got a mom who is constantly putting body positive books / media in front of her and makes a BIG conscious effort to only talk positively about herself/her body in front of her kids.
.
But Ramona is incredibly perceptive. She still managed to internalize what features society has decided are “beautiful” and is already, at age 5, judging herself against that impossible standard. It just shows you how vigilant we all have to be with our kids, especially our girls.
.
I got a laser cutter recently and new creative tools are always really inspiring to me. I’m not the first person to have an idea to write positive affirmations on a mirror—if you look on Pinterest there are about a billion of them. However, most of them validate beauty. “You are beautiful” or “You are perfect” are common phrases. There’s a wonderful children’s book titled “I am enough” and that phrase has really stuck with me. Of course I think my daughter is beautiful (and strong and smart and creative and kind…) and tell her so all the time. But it made me really want to tell her that who she is right now, whatever she looks like, whatever she’s good at or bad at, she is enough.

I made a couple of glyphs for a project to benefit the victims of the explosion in Beirut. Organized by @arabictype, the end result will be a font with dozens of designers contributing decorative letters in the Arabic and Latin alphabets—and all proceeds from font sales will go to Lebanese charities. Stay tuned for the launch, which will happen very shortly! You all should follow Nadine for being an amazing badass/human and @fontlibeirut for updates about the project / to snag a copy of the font when it’s out!

Proud to have played a small part on this cover (drew “Dolly Parton” on the cover and spine) for one of the greatest humans of all time. I LOVE YOU @dollyparton! Thanks for being amazing and also for picking my kids book for the @imaginationlibrary. And thanks for the opportunity @chroniclebooks!
