Somaya Critchlow, 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙟𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 (𝙒𝙞𝙜) 2020 🖤 @somayacritchlow Somaya Critchlow’s figurative paintings of women explore facets of race, sex and culture through an instinctive, stream-of- consciousness process of image making. Working mostly on a very small scale, her works depict bold, curvaceous and self-possessed female characters, of her own creation, that simultaneously combine and subvert the culture expectations of race, gender and power in the history of portraiture. Imbued with dark, rich hues of browns, greys and purples, and using sensuous brushstrokes, her heroines emerge starkly against atmospheric backdrops of thinned oils evocative of classical European painting—Velázquez, Rubens, et al.—and David Lynch’s hazy, seedy environs. They are self-reflective and personal, and at the same time commentary of the cultural, class and political dynamics of contemporary society. ___

Sayre Gomez, 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝘽𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙤𝙤𝙧, 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙥 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙨 (2020) Sayre Gomez uses hyperreal painting as a means of investigating visual culture at large. His paintings stand at the crossroads of image culture and urban reality. Los Angeles—a city overflowing with images in motion, images that sell and announce, images flickering through the windshield of a car—makes the perfect home for this investigation. Dominique Fung, 𝙇𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 (2020) Second generation Chinese-Canadian painter @dominiquefung refigures art history to give her subjects real agency. Fung’s early artistic passions were informed by Vermeer, Manet, Rembrandt, and Goya, but her sense of Chinese heritage was largely informed by vessels and objects she saw at home and on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. These objects “made me question my place in the world and how I felt in terms of my displacement from my origins,” Fung explained. Delicately rendered, these objects populate dream-like scenes that continue the legacy of Surrealism in their play with scale, time, and gravity. In Fung’s paintings, the decorative language on which Orientalism relies is more than just ornamental; these ancient vessels and sculptures are animate protagonists in their own right. 🔥❤️ 𝑲𝑨𝑹𝑩𝑶𝑴𝑩𝒁! 𝑹𝑨𝑳𝑳𝒀 ❤️🔥 Save the date!!! Next Saturday from 1-1:30PM 🤗🏁🚗 Kenny Scharf’s Karbombz! are regularly seen driving on the Los Angeles streets and freeways. Since starting the project in 2013, Scharf has painted 260 cars around the world, about 100 of which are in Los Angeles. Scharf has invited all of the Karbombz! drivers in Los Angeles to participate in a rally, which will take place on Santa Monica Boulevard between San Vicente and Sycamore, Saturday September 26th, beginning at 1:00 pm. About fifty Karbombz! are expected to participate. Scharf’s Karbombz! range from beat up jalopies to luxury brands. The drivers come from all walks of life. Potential Karbombz! owners connect with Scharf on the street in front of his murals, through other drivers, and through Instagram. An essential part of the project is that the cars are always painted for free. Following the rally we invite you to come to the gallery to view @kennyscharf’s 𝑴𝑶𝑶𝑫𝒁, which will be open for viewing following social distancing protocols! ❤️ __

𝓖𝓸𝓸𝓭 𝓟𝓲𝓬𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮𝓼, curated by Austin Lee opens this Saturday, September 19! 😜 For this exhibition, Lee expands John Baldessari’s investigation into what it takes to make a good painting, or more generally, a good picture. In Good Pictures, Lee has brought together artists with whom he has a personal history, some of which he considers part of his artist community. As Lee reveals, “They are artists who have influenced what my idea of painting is. Some through years of discussion, some from only seeing the work online.” The works in Good Pictures embrace the holistic idea suggested by Baldessari’s painting that “all the parts of a good picture are involved with each other, not just placed side by side.” The exhibition showcases a mix of styles and techniques with some technological experimentation.
