“Let me clear my throat”
⚔️🐍⚔️
That be the left side of the pendant border complete now with a few more key characters in place. From the bottom you have Hercules battling the Hydra, Hebe on his upper left and Nemesis (my favourite ride at Alton Towers 🎢) on his upper right. Above Hebe you have Ixion on the wheel, then Echo and Narcissus above, along with Tantalus reaching for the apples. Above Nemesis you have a Hippocampus, then Asteria and followed one one of Mythologies greatest hero’s, Perseus! Next to Perseus you have the Graeae sisters, and him of course holding the head of Medusa.
⚔️🐍⚔️
Onto the top left section of the border now and I’ve put in Hestia, Erebus, Atalanta, Europa and the bull, and Phoebe just under them. Before I go any further along the top section, I’m now going back to the right side to get that all in place.
⚔️🐍⚔️
I’m now taking pre orders for limited edition canvas prints of this piece folks, as we’re nearing the end of this odyssey! DM if you are interested in owning one of them, or contact me via my website. Open edition paper prints won’t need reserving.
⚔️🐍⚔️
“Turn to stone”
🐍🧟♀️🐍
Medusa, everyone’s favourite snake headed gorgon finally makes her long awaited appearance in my Greek Mythology piece on the pendant border. She was mortal amongst the other gorgons and once upon a time, wasn’t so scary looking.
🐍🧟♀️🐍
According to the Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses, she was once a beautiful women that caught the eye of the sea god Poseidon. He in turn, got his way as tends to be the trend in Greek Myth and raped her in Athena’s temple. And never wanting to punish a man, Athena takes it out on Medusa by turning her into the monster we have all come to recognise. At one glance at Medusa’s eyes, you be instantly turned to stone, or petrified so to speak.
🐍🧟♀️🐍
One day though, the hero Perseus came and she had finally met her match. Using Athena’s Aegis, Perseus used polished shield as a mirror of protection so that he didn’t have to look her direct in the eye. He slay Medusa by cutting off her head, and storing it in bag to carry back with him, which came in handy later on on his adventures. It is also said that Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa when killed, and later helped Bellerophon in slaying of the Chimaera. So for everyone thinking that Pegasus was ridden by Perseus, think again!
🐍🧟♀️🐍
“First rule of Mythology - Never underestimate how much there is to know”
🏛🏺🏛
That’s a good chunk of the left side of the pendant border complete, with all of the bottom in place also. I’d say I’m half way through completion on the border, maybe another week or so to go, and then the sky finale and the beard of Zeus!
🏛🏺🏛
When setting out to make this piece, I had no idea how deep I would go down the rabbit hole to tell the stories within Greek mythology. Originally I visualised a few gods placed in a couple of locations across Greece. But as I studied more and more and conceptualised, I realised there’s some much more to be told. And then whilst creating the piece, I have wanted to add in so many more things along the way to tell the myths within. I have decided that with every print I will include a information brochure or leaflet, explaining who’s who and why they are the specific locations. So to everyone who wants to purchase a print, you’ve also got a lot to learn other than just something to fill a space in your wall!
🏛🏺🏛
I’ve also decided in advance that as this has been not only my longest WIP piece to date, but my most favourite one also, that I will not be making the original for sale, prints only. I’ve become attached to it and therefore want to keep it for myself. I may exhibit and showcase it at events and art fairs in the future, but only for display. Unless of course, Zeus himself wants it then we can talk figures 😉⚡️I hope you have enjoyed this odyssey folks, nearly there now!
🏛🏺🏛
“Sleep with one eye open, gripping your pillow tight”
🏺👁🏺
The Cyclopes, famous in Greek myth as one of the original monsters created by Gaia and Uranus. One of the most famous Cyclopes was Polyphemus, whom encountered Odysseus on the Odyssey. And speaking of the Odyssey, just above we have the ship that Odysseus and his men sailed back to Ithaca on, been lured in by the Sirens at the front of the ship.
🏺👁🏺
Next to Polyphemus on the left is Pan the satyr playing his pipes, with Calypso next to him, and then Demeter to the left of the Cyclopes. Then just under you have the garden of the Hesperides, all sitting under the golden apple tree with the Serpent coiled around it. Just opening in the tree is Selene, the moon goddess. And then Orpheus turning back to see his wife Eurydice being pulled back into the underworld. Also, Typhon making an appearance at the bottom.
🏺👁🏺
“Who told you about Fluffy?” - Hagrid
🐕😈🐕
One of Greek mythologies most famous monsters, Cerberus, the three headed dog that guarded gates of the underworld. Nothing got past Cerberus unnoticed, with the exception of a few hero’s, notably Orpheus (soon to be revealed) and when Hercules had to capture him as one of his twelve labours.
🐕😈🐕
Seen with Cerberus is the god of the underworld Hades, looking menacing as ever. Often portrayed as a villainous character, he wasn’t actually all that bad, with the exception of his abduction of Persephone, who can be seen next to him holding the pomegranate. Also in front of Hades is the river Styx with Charon the ferryman, who transported the souls of his or her body into the underworld for the fee of a single coin placed on the dead persons tongue. And just above Cerberus, you can see the Furies, who punished anyone who’s actions violated the natural order. They are also known as the Eumenides, an ironic title meaning “Kindly ones”.
🐕😈🐕
“Where’s your head at!”
⚔️🧟♂️⚔️
Turning to the dark wide now with one of the craziest monsters in all Greek mythology, the Hecatonchires! These race of giants where among the first spawn of Gaia and Uranus, along with the Cyclops. They supposedly had 50 or more heads and one hundred hands. Once the Titans came along, they banished them to Tartarus, the deepest part of the underworld, or just generally, the underworld. And speaking of the underworld, expect to see a few key characters who roam that region coming up very soon. Fluffy from Harry Potter anyone?
⚔️🐕⚔️
Also just to the right you have the shadowy goddess Hecate, and the the a Titan Uranus castrating his father Cronus with the sickle... lovely. Also to the left you can notice Sisyphus pushing the rock up the hill in the underworld... put your back into it mate!
⚔️💪🏻⚔️
A little bit more progress on the bottom right of the pendant border with figures from left to right as follows. From the last post, you have Helen, who’s looking down at Paris. Then there’s Jason with Medea holding the Golden Fleece, then the Argo and Talos and the Harpies. The sea beneath the Argo holds a couple of surprises included a jar, a dolphin and Poseidon with his horses crashing through the waves.
🏛🌊🏛
In the corner we have 1 of 4 ionic columned window spaces, which will feature some of the other realms within Greek Mythology that are not seen in the main piece. This corner particularly will be.... well, let’s just say you’ll be singing The Little Mermaids “Under the sea” when you see it! Cue the steel drums!
🏛🦀🏛
Above the bottom right window also I’ve made a start in the right side of the border with Athena and her owl, the olive tree and Arachne... a wise choice!
🏛🦉🏛
“I challenge you to a duel!”
🏛🗡🏛
I’ve decided to make a start on the pendant border folks before I delve into the skies above. You’ll see why when I eventually make it around to the top. But this is now a nice change of pace and style within the piece. It will mostly consist of shading with warm greys with a hint of silk.
🏛🗡🏛
I want to give that statue in motion effect, showing off all the gods, goddesses, hero’s, monsters and mortals within the border. So I’ve made a start at the bottom from where my last post saw us in Troy. From left to right, you have Ajax, Agamemnon (on horse), Diomedes, the Trojan Horse, Hector vs Achilles, with the city of Troy and a battle behind them, and Helen of Troy on the far right. Paris will feature also, but haven’t got to him just yet, along with Menelaus. Particularly happy with the little arrow through Achilles heel. More border posts to follow!
🏛🏹🏛
“WAR ASSEMBLE”
🌊⚔️🌊
The seas are now almost complete, and I knew that a big section of it would show the many trireme Greek ships heading towards the shores of Troy! In the great poem that is Homer’s “Iliad”, it describes the war between the Greeks and the Trojans that lasted for 10 years. I will feature some of the key characters from this story as part of the pendant border in more detail, such as Hector and Achilles, Paris and Helen, and Agamemnon and Ajax.
🌊⚔️🌊
I’m particularly happy with the light water effect behind Athena, making her stand out as the badass that she is! And the shadows of Hephaestus and Ares on the sea also has gone down nicely also. Soon I’ll be making a start on the skies, and that all important god you’ve all been waiting for... stay tuned!
🌊⚔️🌊
“You’re guna need a bigger boat!”
🌊🦈🌊
All of the Aegean islands have been tricky to colour around, making sure I can both get that shallow clear water look on some of them, yet also allowing the curvature effect if the global light to reflect further away. I’m particularly happy with Artemis’ shadow!
🌊🏝🌊
Notice a few extra ships, and even a mini battle between an Athenian and Spartan ship. I’ll add in a few more of these dotted about, particular off the coast of Troy. I’ve also added some extra splashing effects around Poseidon, giving him some movement.
🌊🔱🌊
And as promised in a previous post, notice the colour of the sea around Dionysus’ feet. It’s red, symbolising his love for wine, but also relating to the myth where he turns the sea into wine after been captured by pirates on his travels around the Mediterranean. More wine please!
🌊🍷🌊
“Blinded by the light”
🌊🧜🏻♂️🌊
So the seas are now starting to reach the Asia Minor coast line, and parts of the horizon. As you can see, I’ve added a few boats (can you spot my logo), and the sea god Triton, who was a half man half fish and was a famous musician who played a conch shell. I will put in a few more sea gods such as Claucus and Proteus, along with some sea nymphs here and there.
🌊🧜🏻♂️🌊
One thing that might start to look more effective now in the piece is the global lighting effect. Notice the light shimmering line which will lead up to the suns position. It’s key that all the shadows lead away from that perspective point. Also as it nears the horizon, the shadows appear a little more faded and lighter, where as in the foreground the colours are more vibrant and darker. I think once the sky is in place, it will all make a lot more sense.
🌊🧜🏻♂️🌊
Getting there, hoping to have the sea complete by the start if next week and then onto the sky!
🌊🧜🏻♂️🌊
“I . AM . IRONMAN !”
🌊🤖🌊
Talos, the giant bronze automaton roamed around the island of Crete as its guardian. Some say he/it was created by Daedalus, the master inventor and architectural genius behind the Labyrinth. Others say however that Hephaestus created him as he is the god of metalworks. And in other accounts, he is thought to be the offspring of the Meliae nymphs. Daedalus makes more sense to me though as they both originate from Crete and their myths are told there.
🌊🤖🌊
Talos protected Crete from invaders, by throwing large boulders at their ships as they neared, destroying them with ease. One day though he had met his match when Jason and the Argonauts arrived on their quest home. They realised that Talos had a pipeline stretching from his neck down to his ankle. Running though it was his life source, Ichor, a silvery-gold blood that ran in the veins of the gods. And on his ankle was a brass nail, that if removed, the Ichor would bleed out and Talos would fall. Medea the enchantress mesmerised Talos, freezing him mid stride as he waded though the water towards the Argo. Pirithous jump into the water, swam out to the giants ankle and dislodged the nail. Talos roared out in pain, and the automaton creaked and buckled, falling backwards into the sea. The Argonauts sailed on into Crete where they stocked up with supplies and continued on their journey home.

That’s a good chunk of the left side of the pendant border complete, with all of the bottom in place also. I’d say I’m half way through completion on the border, maybe another week or so to go, and then the sky finale and the beard of Zeus!
