It's the final day of Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing! We've got a really fantastic lineup--and today is Sunday, so we'll kick it off in the Gospel Tent with Irma Thomas's Tribute to Mahalia Jackson from Jazz Fest 2009 at 11am CT.
As most of you have heard, Toots Hibbert of @tootsandthemaytals died on Friday. To honor the reggae legend, WWOZ will be sharing a set from the band's 2007 @voodoonola appearance around 12:30pm CT.
We're also excited to take you back-- way back-- to the Municipal Auditorium in 1945 for a special set from two of the greatest New Orleans jazzmen of all time: Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.
Around 5:30pm, listener demand dictated that we reprise the James Booker set from @tipitinasuptown in April 1978 that aired during the first weekend of Festing In Place. Not only does the set feature Booker with a full band, including Charles Neville, he's also joined by the one and only Art "Poppa Funk" Neville. If you heard it a few days ago, you'll definitely still want to tune in this time-- the reprise includes some songs we didn't air the first time around.
Following Booker, Art and Charles "return to the stage" to close out Festing In Place with a 2012 @thenevillebrothers Jazz Fest set. The Neville Brothers were the traditional closing act on the "big stage" at Jazz Fest for many years.
You also won't want to miss sets from @tabbenoitofficial, New Orleans Nightingales, Doreen Ketchens, Beau Jocque (who was one of the most requested artists from last spring's Jazz Festing In Place!), @theradiators, Johnny Adams, Germaine Bazzle & Betty Shirley, Evan Christopher & David Torkanowsky, and Eddie Bo.
Hear it all only on WWOZ at 90.7 FM locally or wwoz.org worldwide.
A big thank you to our co-producers at the Archive of the @jazzandheritagefoundation-- we couldn't do any of this without the Archive! 💜💛

Happy Labor Day! We hope everyone out there is ready to take it easy and kick back with some : The Next Fest Thing on WWOZ! Today's broadcast is bookended with the Boutte family. We open with Boutte Family Sunday Praise at 11am CT.
Late in the day, join us for "Shake Your Boutte!" @therealjohnboutte’s 2005 performance was a highlight of "Jazz Festing in Place," and we're bringing him back, along with back-to-back sets from his sister Lillian Boutte and niece Tricia Boutte -- in a Labor Day celebration of this great musical family. We hope you'll "Shake Your Boutte" with us starting around 5:30pm today.
We're able to bring you some great musicians we were unable to last time, because in some cases there weren't any Jazz Fest recordings readily available, or because we simply couldn't fit everyone in. This includes @lostbayouramblers, whose 2010 set from @ylcwats will air around noon, and Pete Fountain, whose 1962 set from the Parisian Room will air around 1pm.
Other highlights today include Ernie K-Doe from @JazzFest 2000; Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars from Gulf Aid 2010; Harold Battiste from @cacnola 1981; @jasonmarsalis, then in his senior year of high school, from Jazz Fest 1995; Jesse McBride Big Band paying tribute to Harold Battiste at Jazz Fest 2016; @marcbroussard from YLC Wednesday at the Square; Midnite Disturbers at Jazz Fest 2010; Stephanie Jordan Big Band from Jazz Fest 2012; and @rosieledetzydeco from Jazz Fest 2014.
Tune in and turn up wherever you are-- listen in locally at 90.7 FM and worldwide at wwoz.org. 💜
Welcome back to Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing! It's Sunday, so we are, of course, kicking it off with a set from @AaronNeville in the Gospel Tent at @JazzFest in 2009. It starts at 11am CT.
Later today, we'll feature two very special performances. In the afternoon, you can hear a highly anticipated set from the legendary James Booker, recorded live at @tipitinasuptown in 1978. This set features Booker on both piano and organ, and includes a very special guest on saxophone a few minutes in. This recording comes to us courtesy of the Thorny Penfield Collection of the Hogan Jazz Archive, a division of Tulane University Special Collections. @tuspeccoll
The other is Louis Prima live at the Casbar in Las Vegas in 1963. This recording comes to us courtesy of the Estate of Louis Prima, and we are very excited to share it with you. This performance marks the first time Festing In Place features a recording from outside of New Orleans.
This is also a big @fqfest day with sets from Henry Butler (2005), Theresa Andersson (2004), Little Freddie King (2001), and Walter Wolfman Washington (2012)!
And don't miss out on Little Queenie from Le Chat Noir (2001), @tromboneshorty at Jazz Fest 2007, @marioabney at Basin Street Station (2015), @TheRevivalists at @ylcwats (2016), Zachary Richard (2010), or Tami Lynn (2008).
Today will close out with a perennial Jazz Fest favorite-- @JimmyBuffett. His set starts around 6pm CT. And you may just hear a little 🎹 magic thrown in there... ✨
Tune in and turn up wherever you are-- listen in locally at 90.7 FM and worldwide at wwoz.org! 🎧

In May, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation proudly partnered with Spotify's COVID-19 Music Relief Program. Three months later and thanks to the generosity of over 1100 donors, the @jazzandheritagefoundation has raised over $84,000 for the Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund. As the funding drive draws to a close, your support is more important than ever: with music venues closed for the foreseeable future, the industry is in crisis.
