What can precariously balanced rocks tell us about earthquakes?
A new Imperial study investigates PBRs – formations found throughout the world where a slender boulder is balanced on a pedestal boulder.
They might look precarious, but these rocks have survived countless earthquakes over the years. They can therefore tell us the upper limit of earthquake shaking that has occurred since they were first formed.
Here are some pics of our civil and environmental engineers during their PBR field trip to California.

Old mould, fresh insights!
Our life scientists have sequenced the genome of Alexander Fleming’s penicillin mould for the first time and compared it to later versions.
The results reveal that UK and US strains of Penicillium mould use slightly different methods to produce antibiotics, potentially suggesting new routes for industrial production.
