Easy warm day today, but despite the 80F temperature and the notion one would not expect to see much on such a balmy day we were pleasantly rewarded with 885 Sharp-shinned Hawks and a wealth of falcons, 29 Kestrels and 20 Merlin.
We are hoping tomorrow will provide much more as Red-tailed Hawks ramp up, we had 83 today!

We wanted to give quick update despite not much to report the last few days. I’m sure all have been enjoying these Indian summer days, but it does make this a tad slow on the migration front.
Sharp-shinned Hawks have continued to move in moderate numbers, even choosing to fight against strong head winds.
Passerines have been most numerous as Pine Siskin’s continue, Rusty Blackbirds are still moving strongly and American Robins are kicking in.
The rest of the week looks much of the same, but tomorrow is indicating WNW winds, so let’s hope there are birds in the pocket to keep the counters and banders busy!

Records are there to be broken, and today another fell. In 1996, 799 Turkey Vultures were counted representing the largest 1 day total at HRBO.
Today the counters counted 854 for a new one day total, well done to the counters and well done Nick Pusateri who did a phenomenal job counting the vast majority of those vultures.

Today had a real fall feel to it.
Gusty NW winds blew in some late Broad-winged Hawks (266), finally some Cooper’s Hawks (8), the biggest Red-tailed Hawk day so far (85), but another stellar day for Sharp-shinned Hawks (1,447) who stole the show, with 1,000 tallied before noon!
On the passerine/songbird front Yellow-rumped Warblers were by far the most numerous with 560 confirmed, the true number was likely far greater passing through. The wind kept them low and many past through in the tree tops out of reach of been spotted.
The Blue Jay race to 50,000 on the season edges ever closer with only 19 individuals to go!

People have been asking about how the owl banding has been going? So, we just wanted to give a quick update on what’s going on so far...
Firstly, we would like to introduce to you to Danny Erickson the owl bander. Danny first discovered birding while at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated with a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology in 2017. Since that time, he has worked on a variety of banding projects. This includes trapping, banding, and counting migrating raptors both with HawkWatch International in central New Mexico and Cedar Grove Ornithological Research Station in eastern Wisconsin. Please welcome Danny!!
So far we have banded 275 Northern Saw Whet Owls, 216 HY (hatch year) + 51 SY (second year) +3 ASY (after second year) +1 AHY (after hatch year).

What a great day yesterday was for vis-migging!! VISual MIGration is one of the true wonders of nature, and from start to finish everyone that came was treated to an amazing day at the ridge.
The passerine (song bird) flight in the morning was in the top three days I can remember in the past few years. We simply could not count and/or identify the vast majority. Cornell University’s Bird Cast radar estimated around 20,000 birds passing over head, per hour, per sq/km! Simply astounding. We were able to identify at least 56 species. Enjoy the vis-mig photos.
Raptor-wise it was apparently world Sharpie appreciation day again as almost 93% of all the raptors counted yesterday (868) were Sharp-shinned Hawks (805). Posting times
