How can Indigenous knowledge move the fashion industry forward? We asked some of the most influential Indigenous People in the fashion, textile, and apparel industries how their cultural heritage shapes their work—and how it might move an at times antiquated system in a more sustainable direction. In celebration of , head to the link in our bio to read what @j.okuma, @designerkini, Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu of @solerebels, @louiegong, @amandaindigenousartist, @reicheolga, @d_andreanne, @lisafolawiyo, @brandy.alia, and Daniela Poulsen (Yanchapaxi Silva) of @cotopaxi had to say.
Radha Blank wrote, directed, and stars in her debut film, “The Forty-Year-Old Version,” which is available to stream on Netflix now. The semi-autobiographical tale follows a fictional Radha Blank, a Black woman on the cusp of 40 trying to reclaim her sexuality and voice as a playwright in a quickly gentrifying New York. Blank herself grew up in Brooklyn, the child of struggling artists, and went on to enjoy some success in the world of Off-Broadway theater before taking TV writing gigs to pay the bills. Like her character, the real Blank created a hip-hop alter ego, RadhaMUSprime, in order to help her process the crises of art and identity that she experienced following the death of her mother in 2013. “I think I am becoming the person my mother envisioned me to be,” Blank tells BAZAAR for our October issue, “because what she always wanted me to do was go further than she did.” Read the full story by @candice.frederick.37 at the link in our bio.

In honor of photographer Melvin Sokolsky’s 87th birthday today, we’re looking back at one of his most iconic BAZAAR covers of all time. Model Simone D’Aillencourt graced our March 1963 issue and Sokolsky defied all odds to make it happen with help from creative stylist, Ali MacGraw. “Talk before the shoot was that it could not be done. Photoshop did not exist,” says @sokolsky. “I designed the bubble suspended from a small crane by an 1/8 inch cable and shot from Weehawken, New Jersey to look back at New York.” And the results? Pure magic.

Race-based hair discrimination is a real and devastating experience for millions of Black women, men, and children in this country. Studies have found that Black women are more likely to be sent home from the workplace due to their hairstyles. Children are also being “penalized” for their natural and protective hairstyles, with some young students being forced to cut their hair to participate in sports. The national fight to end hair discrimination is ongoing, and it’s being championed by The CROWN Act and CROWN Coalition (@thecrownact). So far, the legislation has only been passed in seven states. On September 21, the House of Representatives passed the federal CROWN bill and, if approved by the Senate and signed by President Donald Trump, it would mean race-based hair discrimination would be illegal in every state. You hold the power to get this bill passed by simply reaching out to your legislators. So, how do you get started advocating for the bill? Head to the link in our bio to find out what steps you can take next.

Natural hairstyles can be a celebration of self-expression. But for too long, they’ve also been a source of discrimination. A new law may change that. In July 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the CROWN Act (@thecrownact), an acronym for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair. Implemented earlier this year, the measure prohibits schools and workplaces from discriminating against people based on their natural hairstyles. “I wore braids in high school in the ’80s without backlash,” says California State Senator @hollyjmitchell, who authored the CROWN legislation. “I cannot imagine how the trajectory of my life would have changed if my choice to wear my hair natural had not been allowed.” Learn more about the CROWN act and read the full story written by @ashley.weatherford from our October issue at the link in our bio.
