Hugo Boss Prize 2020 nominee, Deana Lawson, discusses photography and her use of the medium as a means of communion and transcendence.
⠀
“I think about that sort of miracle of light,” says Lawson. “I think about the idea that we are all light having a human experience. When I make a picture, it is about being in communion or trying to access an unseen truth.”

The Hugo Boss Prize honors outstanding achievement in contemporary art, celebrating the work of remarkable artists whose practices are among the most innovative and influential of our time. The recipient of the award will be announced on October 22.
Today’s illustration is by @designsbymaha—“I made this sketch after visiting the Guggenheim for the first time. I was inspired by how the museum’s organic architecture breaks the linearity of the surrounding buildings. I wanted to capture the magical feeling of how it stands out from the rest of the block and lures you in.”

Hugo Boss Prize 2020 nominee, Kevin Beasley (@kevinmbeasley), explains the methodology of his multilayered practice in sculpture, installation, sound, and video.
⠀
“On one level I'm very deeply invested in the thing as it is,” says Beasley. “In some way or shape or fashion, it's come into my life and now I'm building a relationship to it. To then create actual images and create a narrative out of it, that decision is rooted in if I have a story to tell.”

Hugo Boss Prize 2020 nominee, Nairy Baghramian, discusses her process for creating memorable sculptures that reimagine the workings of the body.
⠀
“I have a very classical way of working, a traditional way of thinking of materials,” says Baghramian. “To get the sense of the politics of the material and the shapes, I have to understand it. Looking at a piece of marble, it already creates so many questions, and so many memories.”

This museum tells the story of Liberty like you’ve never seen before, through Lady Liberty's original torch, artifacts, an immersive theater, and opportunities for visitors to reflect upon what Liberty means to them. The rooftop vista and incredible views of Manhattan alone are worth the trip! In its inaugural year, the new museum welcomed over 3 million visitors from around the globe, all with one thing in common: a love for Liberty. 🗽

: A vital part of the Ellis Island restoration project was The American Immigrant Wall of Honor. As the Ellis Island Main Building and Great Hall were being restored to their original glory, people from all around the country donated to have their family’s name inscribed on the Wall of Honor to honor their heritage.
⠀
The Wall showcases over 775,000 names of immigrants who represent all ethnicities, all years of arrival, all ports of entry, and all modes of travel. To this day, the Wall of Honor remains the ONLY place in the U.S. where families can honor their heritage permanently at a national monument! To learn more about adding your family’s name to the Wall and how that helps the monuments, visit statueofliberty.org/support 🗽

: In 1982, The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation was founded with the mission to restore Lady Liberty and Ellis Island to their original glory (➡️ swipe for the after photo!). The immigration station operated from 1892 to 1954, welcoming millions of immigrants from every corner of the world with the promise of a better life. The Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, celebrating those immigrants and their bravery, opened to the public on September 10, 1990. We just celebrated 30 years!
⠀
Visitors touring the Great Hall, baggage room, and restored dormitories can feel the spirit of the hopeful arrivals eager to find opportunity, and the Museum’s interactive exhibits bring their voyages to life.
⠀
Ellis Island is open to the public and welcoming visitors! Don’t forget to stop by The American Family Immigration History Center to research your family history and uncover your Ellis Island connection in our database of over 65 million records. To plan your visit, book your tickets via @statuecruises.
