Greene Naftali now represents Jonathan Lasker🔅Over his four-decade career, painter Jonathan Lasker has developed a singular visual language through his fluid and elusive investigation of the relationship between painting, semiotics, and metaphor, defining new terrain within the material concerns of the medium. Oscillating between modernist concepts and the subjectivity of gestural paintings, Lasker enters a dialectic that exploits the mechanisms of abstraction. Lasker will introduce his work at Greene Naftali with a historical overview in Spring 2021, followed by a show of recent paintings in Spring 2022. Today in Brussels, @argos_arts opens If UR Reading This It's 2 Late, Vol. 3, Tony Cokes’ first comprehensive exhibition in Belgium. For the last thirty years, Cokes has brought together image, text, and sound in innovative ways, creating thought-provoking video art centered on questions of truth, social justice, and capitalism. If UR Reading This It's 2 Late, Vol. 3 shows the artist's works on pop and electronic music. Named after a Drake mixtape, the exhibition underscores the importance of ‘mixing’ in Tony Cokes’ art. Pivotal to this is the quoting of various authors, from Aretha Franklin to Morrissey, from Malcolm X to Louis Althusser. Bringing together these fragmented texts with image and sound, Cokes creates powerful messages that subsequently initiate analysis and reflection. Haegue Yang: Emergence, the first North American survey exhibition by the acclaimed South Korean artist, opens at the Art Gallery of Ontario (@agotoronto) today and runs through Jan. 31, 2021. In addition to the 82 works featured in the exhibition, the AGO has commissioned two new works by the artist. Curated by Adelina Vlas, the AGO’s associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Haegue Yang: Emergence will be on view on Level 5 of the AGO’s David and Vivian Campbell Centre for Contemporary Art. A leading artist of her generation, this focused survey of Yang’s artwork includes large-scale installations, sculptures and two-dimensional artworks from the last 25 years, and intentionally resists any kind of chronology. The exhibition title, Emergence, refers to a natural, social, and economic phenomenon in which a whole entity exhibits qualities and behaviors that its individual parts do not have on their own. Gedi Sibony: The Terrace Theater opens today in our 8th floor gallery ⚡️ For his sixth solo exhibition at the gallery, Sibony has combined salvaged materials fashioned into objects, staged within and among the remnants of temporary walls from the previous exhibition, guiding visitors through a symbolic sequence distributed in board blocks of space. John Knight’s "Grassroots” is currently on view in Parc des Eaux-Vives on the occasion of the 2020 Geneva Biennale Sculpture Garden. The arched form is a brief "detour" in the park’s pre-existing irrigation pipework. Disrupting the system’s subterranean nature, Knight’s systemic gesture adds a new section of piping in the form of a "bulge" protruding from the lawn. Initiated and organized by artgenève in collaboration with MAMCO and the City of Geneva, the 2020 Geneva Biennale is curated by Balthazar Lovay. On view through September 30, it presents some thirty artists' projects, including numerous commissions. (His titles offer little help; rather, like unimplicated bystanders, they say, Don’t look at me!) To think the multifarious happenings in Price, imagine a junk drawer. Think how a pack of gum shows through a binder clip through a black scissors handle, woodgrain and printed matter through the wooly clear of bag plastic. Amid layers and adjacencies, the undivided life of this utterly familiar, bizarre reality appears in a play of tones.
