They are people from very varying professional fields such as hairdressing, pharmacy and organic farming, but they are united by their struggle against the massive use of man-made pesticides in their commune. A four-strong delegation from Mals received the 2020 EuroNatur Award yesterday on the island of Mainau on Lake Constance. This award honours the community for their persistence in fighting against the use of agricultural chemicals that poison our environment. For almost six years, a large number of the inhabitants of Mals have been standing up for their health and for a biodiverse agriculture – despite huge resistance from the farming lobbies, politicians and the judiciary. Representatives of the so-called “Mals Way” have often been the subject of judicial proceedings. Furthermore, the inhabitants of Mals will still have to argue in court their case for the implementation of their referendum. ------------- Es sind Menschen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Berufsfeldern wie Friseur, Apotheker oder Ökolandbau, und sie eint der Kampf gegen den massiven Einsatz künstlich hergestellter Pestizide in ihrer Gemeinde: Eine vierköpfige Delegation aus Mals nahm gestern auf der @inselmainau den EuroNatur-Preis 2020 entgegen. Mit dieser Auszeichnung wurde die Gemeinde für ihr ihr Durchhaltevermögen beim Einsatz gegen Ackergifte gewürdigt. Seit knapp sechs Jahren setzen sich viele Menschen aus Mals für ihre Gesundheit und für eine biodiversitätsfreundliche Landwirtschaft ein – zahlreichen Widerständen aus Agrarlobby, Politik und Justiz zum Trotz. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter dieser als ‚Malser Weg‘ bekannt gewordenen Initiative wurden in der Vergangenheit schon mehrmals mit juristischen Klagen konfrontiert. Neither intimidation nor legal action could deflect the founders of the Mals campaign from their path towards an agriculture free from poisons. The town in South Tyrol will receive the EuroNatur award 2020 on Thursday next week for their efforts against pesticides. The second picture shows apples being watered.

It was not a good year for the storks in Europe's stork villages. Either extreme dryness or too much rain caused the young storks in the nests to suffer. Altogether, only a few fledglings were able to fly out. The climate crisis did not even stop for the charismatic birds. Even forests which are Natura 2000 sites are being logged in Romania. The illegal logging continues even after an infringement process against Romania was started in February 2020.
