Set on a forested lot on Vancouver Island, this angular cabin is perfectly poised to soak up breathtaking vistas. The two-bedroom home, set back from the water in the district of Sooke, captures views of everything the land has to offer: the ocean, the forest, and the mountains. “Each space has a different view,” says architect Javier Campos of @campos_studio. “Even though the house is very small, when you move from space to space, you feel that you are in a different area of the forest.” Before building, Campos and his team spent ample time on-site to fully understand the setting, and to better appreciate Sooke’s motto of “Where the rainforest meets the sea.” As a result, the sculptural retreat follows the contour of the land and feels one with the surrounding landscape. The panoramic views of Portland’s Lake Oswego are so good, you’d almost forget you’re standing in a midcentury cool enough to make Sinatra swoon. “The whole idea is that it’s a vacation,” says architect Melody Emerick of @emerickarchitects, who recently updated the 6,000-square-foot, 1963 home. “We’ve got the cool bar downstairs, and we’ve got the hot tub that was craned over the house so it can overlook the water.” The overriding design brief from the clients—“fabbo paddo,” a term likely coined by the Rat Pack themselves—was all about celebrating the home’s existing Mad Men style while making a few architectural changes to foster more openness. Aside from spacial adjustments, floor-to-ceiling wood paneling in cherry and walnut, ample glazing, and original basalt quarried from the site keep the slick ’60s ambiance intact. Still, it keeps a low profile from the street, where the owners now live full-time in vacation mode. Move over, hygge. This cabin and its accompanying casitas outside of Austin, Texas, are all about gezelligheid—the Dutch’s take on all things cozy. Inspiration for the retreat struck when the cabin’s owners, one of whom had spent some years in Amsterdam, stumbled across a spirit of familiarity when they viewed architect Tim Cuppett’s home during an American Institute of Architects tour. You’ll notice immediately that this project’s size—four buildings at a total of 3,600 square feet—doesn’t paint a picture of intimacy. Sprawl aside, the main home features a breezeway where the family can gather for dinner, and the rest of the rooms, lit moodily with an array of sconces, are pure gezelligheid. “A big part of creating that feeling was getting the scale right,” recalls Cuppett. “Even though they wanted to be able to accommodate several families, each of the spaces is intimate.” The two bedrooms, the bunk room with twin beds for the kids, the living room, and the kitchen are all neat little low-ceilinged compartments that offer a contrast from the wide-open skies outside. Tour the Texas interpretation of Dutch coziness at the link in our bio, or catch it as part of this year’s @aiaaustin Home Tours, which are being held virtually from October 16 to 19. – Photos by @whitpreston and @pkfinkel Architecture by @timcuppettarchitects + @d_a_kilpatrick Landscape Design by @lionheart_atx
