Here’s a view familiar to tens of thousands of students and alumni - the main entrance to the DMU library. There’s no doubt this is one of the most important spaces at DMU and a community within its own right. Students come here not just for books, but archives, advice, a quiet place to study and the odd bit of socialising over a coffee at all hours of the day and night. This is in fact an extension to the red brick library built in 1976. It was designed by eminent architect Eva Jiricna and built in 1997 at a cost of £4.4 million. The extension shares many characteristics with Jiricna’s other work, such as the grey stone and canopies seen at the cultural centre in Zlin, Czech Republic.

A beautiful picture of Leicester Town Hall’s clock tower showing that, despite the downpours, we’re still managing to experience wonderful, if intermittent, blue skies. Did you know the Town Hall used to be home to Leicester City Council and was opened in 1876? Builders used the famous Ketton Stone from our neighbouring county of Rutland. This stone was also used to build many of the famous colleges in Cambridge as well as the stunning Burghley House in Staffordshire.

Have you ever wondered why there is a bronze of three sportsmen in the city centre, near the Clock Tower. Students may not realise that this statue was commissioned after our three historic sports teams all won top trophies in the same season. Between 1996 and 1997, Leicestershire County Cricket Club won the Britannic Assurance County Championship, Leicester City won the Coca Cola Cup (now the Carabao), and Leicester Tigers won the Pilkington Cup (the premier championship trophy at the time).
It’s not often that three professional clubs in one city claim a treble like this. The bronze statue was commissioned by the Leicester Mercury and Leicester City Council to celebrate and the city was widely recognised as the sporting capital of England. Will it ever happen again?
