After being closed for 27 years we opened the refurbished Bar do Porto Corrubedo, Galicia. Thank you to the local team especially architect Sofia Blanco Santos but also those friends that supported from afar, John Morgan for the graphics, Mario Nanni for the wonderful lighting and to Alberto Alessi for his extreme generosity by supplying us with all the plates bowls crockery and cutlery.

Last year we decided to open a bar in our village and on Saturday in spite of everything Bar do Porto, one of the original bars of Corrubedo opened again. It closed the year that the Chipperfield family first came here on the invitation of the Architect Manolo Gallego, 27 years ago. Thanks to the consideration of the people of the village the complicated predicament of opening a bar in the current circumstances was a wonderful occasion, made even more significant by the presence of the President of Galicia, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo and his partner Eva Cárdenas. Thank you to the team who made it possible especially Sofia Santos Blanco who designed it with me and made it happen, also to John Morgan for the graphics, Mario Nanni for the lights and Alberto Alessi for stocking us up with Alessi Tonale.

Yesterday we lost our beloved Kurt. We owe him everything, he leaves us so much especially our memories of him and Margit. Family and office totally relied on him for his support, encouragement and wisdom. He was without any reservations a truly good person in every way. We will miss him so much, but remember him with happiness and pride.

As we close the July/August issue of Domus 2020 and prepare the remaining three, we’re looking back at the six issues published so far. Our ten issues are prefaced by an extended editorial agenda on subjects intended to provoke the design community into considering the fundamental issues of environmental crisis social inequality and how they should adjust the priorities of our work. In doing so, we have consciously steered this year’s issues towards more urgent questions of practice rather than a review of newly completed works. Starting in January with the all-encompassing issue of planning, we have also explored social housing, protection and identity, design, shelter and home, and community. We are grateful for the thoughtful contributions from Reinier de Graaf, Simon Kretz, Christian Salewski, Lynsey Hanley, Paolo Berdini, Robert Bevan, Thomas Will, Deyan Sudjic, Jonathan Keates, Tomà Berlanda, Richard Sennett, Eric Klinenberg, Rory Olcayto, Bernd Scherer and Luis Fernández-Galiano. Huge thanks also to Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani who has shared his brilliantly precise responses every month, and to Thomas Struth who has contributed striking images (shown here) to bring these matters into sharper focus. With June Domus I am more than halfway through my year as guest editor. Thank you everyone for your support and participation, especially my team and all the contributors in particular the regulars, Thomas Struth, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Iwan Baan, Jasper Morrison. Over the next days I will give a visual overview of the completed editions, January to June. We start with the spectacular covers made by Thomas Demand. Each cover is a facade, each building is nothing more than what it is but at the same time like all buildings carries a story, one that is not necessary to know. We have all benefited from filling in pages behind the cover that Thomas has created for us. The last four are on their way and are just as powerful. We have lost another great character of the Milan design world and a dear friend.Enrico Astori embodied the unique combination of culture and enterprise that was at the heart of the Milan design world.Along with Adelaide and Antonio he created one of the most unique companies based totally around his instincts his intelligence,his courage and his friendships.I was lucky to be included in the group of people that he surrounded himself with,who he trusted ,inspired and entertained with great joy and generosity..
