A rosaceae by any other name - to quote the Shakespear clichè - can often be hard to spot in this broad plant family. Herbaceous strawberries and raspberries, shrubby roses, majestic apples, pears, and plum trees - this family has it all.
Yet despite their differences, they all maintain some basic flower structure patterns; 5 sepals, petals in sets of 5's, often replacing some of the many stamen and 1 to many pistils.
This quince flower looks much like a rose, yet when fully open, looks much like a large apple blossom. All different. All the same.
Take a moment. Smell the flowers. Count the petals. Feel the connections.

Oh 2020, What a year it has been. We had big plans to continue our weekend Plant Literacy workshops, teaching food forest basics, polyculture, permaculture and horticulture for backyard perennial food production..
And then... well, you know what happened 🙃
Demand for fruit trees from across Australia has been unprecedented, a renewed movement from the ground up of people looking to grow their own backyard food and medicine.
As we've reached the Spring equinox and the final quarter of 2020, we are fast approaching our 40 year anniversary!
It's a time of reflecting on the past 4 decades and envisioning the future with renewed focus and commitment to our shared mission.

The delicious Rollinia (Rollinia deliciosa) another tropical classic in the Custard Apple family (Annonaceae) related to Soursop and the more cold hardy Cherimoya.
With 108 accepted genera and about 2400 known species, the Annonaceae are the largest family in the Magnoliales.
It has been described by some as the lemon meringue pie fruit. The taste just gets better and better, when it is completely yellow and the nubs blacken, the texture is softer and gooey, but it is still delicious.

We've been cropping out Kyogle way - they don't love the cold but are surprisingly resilient. It's not uncommon for them to drop a few leaves over winter and bounce back in spring.

The Big Beautiful Bottle Trees of Central Queensland! This is the classic Narrow-leaved bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris).
We also have some Broad-leaved bottle trees (Brachychiton australis) available soon from seed collected on the last trip up north.

J A B O T I C A B A (Myrciaria cauliflora) aka the Brazillian Grape Tree.
The fruit grows on the trunk - known as Cauliflory. Sometimes this avoids detection from the birds, bats and possums - and sometimes they work it out, so we recommend slinging a net over before the fruit ripens.
This is an ideal specimen for an edible hedge if you're feeling patient (slow growing and won't set fruit until around 5 years). Here is a tip from Carla - collect and dry the fruit skin and you can make a tasty antioxidant rich tea (put the pulp inside the freezer for homemade sorbet!).

M O R I N G A - aka The Horseradish or Drumstick Tree (Moringa oleifera) from the dry tropics of India.
A quick Ecosia search reveals just how nutritionally abundant this wonder plant is.
Moringa plants are surprisingly frost and drought hardy once established.

Truly a taste sensation - the humble Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) brings a tropical flavour into the winter months for sub-tropical growers.
Originally from China this delicious self-pollinating fruit is easy to grow and maintain at a compact 3 or 4 meter size for ease of harvest and netting.
The critically endangered Coxen's fig parrot (believed by some to have slipped into extinction) was last seen in the Murwillumbah area of Northern NSW eating from a Loquat tree on the outskirts of town! Posting times
