For millions of girls worldwide, missing school isn’t as fun as it sounds. According to the @MalalaFund, the lack of teachers and facilities, high costs of education, and harmful gender norms keep 129 million girls from pursuing an education. Add COVID-19 to the mix, and these girls are joined by millions more as 188 countries have implemented nationwide school closures to slow the transmission of the disease.

A bridge that unites, that's Andrés Gómez. He arrived in the United States from Colombia at age 14. Upon arriving, he ceased to be Colombian to become Latin-American. He embraced the diverse cultures, flavors, music and friends from all over Latin America opening his heart to the rich Hispanic community in the United States.
For Andres Gómez, his faith and taking care of our neighbor are synonymous with action, and this is something that aligns well with his current role at CRS. Andres leads initiatives that engage the Hispanic Community in the United States to support of CRS’ mission.
He recognizes the large economic power of the Hispanic community in the United States: “We are a community that is growing, we have a voice, a right to an opinion and a vast economic power. We can use our resources, contribute our share to be able to change the conditions of Latin America.”

How long has it been since your last haircut? Madina Mukandayisenga is back at work at her barbershop in Rwanda. She says, “Clients prefer my salon because I offer good services. They also trust me because I promote hygiene. At the beginning, clients doubted my skills as a barber because I am a woman, but with time they started trusting me.”

Drocella Musabyimana is a small business owner in Rwanda who lost the ability to earn an income due to the far-reaching effects of COVID-19. She was one of 9,000 people to receive cash support from CRS, to help promote business resilience after the lockdown brought her operations to a standstill.

Happy birthday, Instagram! Today Instagram turns 10 years old. To celebrate, we’re reposting one of our most popular posts of all time, which happens to feature another 10-year-old. From June 2019:
Ten-year-old Morzal has found her voice and has started writing about her fear of war. She sits by the window in her family’s living room in a remote village of Afghanistan, with her notebooks spread out on the floor. Her schoolwork comes first, then her personal writing. “[Writing] has made me more confident,” she says. “It’s like talking to a good friend.” Morzal is the first in her family to have ever attended school.

Image: A quote from Henri Nouwen that reads, "Nobody escapes being wounded. We all are wounded people, whether physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. The main question is not 'How can we hide our wounds?' so we don’t have to be embarrassed, but 'How can we put our woundedness in the service of others?' When our wounds cease to be a source of shame, and become a source of healing, we have become wounded healers."
A Guatemalan. A mother. A peacebuilder. This is how Isabel Aguilar, Technical Advisor at CRS Guatemala, defines herself. When Isabel joined the CRS staff, she thought it was God’s plan. Now, five years later, she knows that with solidarity we can change the world. Isabel understands that peace is not a romantic or symbolic idea, but rather is something that starts with a dignified life for everyone. She sums it up by saying “Peace is born in the human heart.” Thank you, Isabel, for your passion and commitment to building peace!

At 65 years old, Meena Darji of Nepal admits that she can still learn a few things. Participating in a CRS orientation taught her the importance of frequent handwashing and physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now she keeps herself and others safe by wearing a mask whenever she leaves home.

Happy ! ☕ Today is a great day to pray for the people who bring us our favorite beverage. We are thankful for the coffee cherry pickers, the farmers, distributors, grocery store clerks, and baristas who all make it happen.

Carla Fajardo grew up in Peru, surrounded by conflict and political turmoil. It was here that Carla committed her life to social justice. She obtained her master's degree in the United States, then went on to work in Uganda, Burundi, Chad, Haiti, Senegal, and Madagascar, where she is currently the CRS Country Representative. Carla’s vision is to see “people living with dignity, with access to resources, with equity, and the ability to exercise their rights and participate in making decisions about their own lives.” We couldn’t agree more.
